Janette Reynaga's insight:

Performance enhancing drugs have been around ever since any athletic competitions first started. A Cyclist in 1886 was the first case to die from drug use. It was believed that the drug he used was trimethyl. Trimethyl increased stamina. Around the late 1930s athletes would inject testosterone. German Nazi soldiers first used this to increase strength and muscle mass. After a while, testosterone injections were being used by German athletes and may gold medals were won thanks to synthetic drugs. Usually when talking about performance enhancing drugs, people think of steroids. Besides steroids, other substances include creatine, androstenedione, ephedra, and erythropoietin.

Janette Reynaga's insight:

There has been studies of genes testing. These gene tests are believed to enhance performance. Researchers are studying ACTN3 (R577X) and ACE I/D polymorphism. alpha Actinin 3 is a protein that helps the muscle fibers stay strong. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting twitch muscle enzyme. The ACE II allele has been known to show higher volume oxygen when present, therefore making muscle fibers twitch slower. One question scientists feel like would be asked is if people should get genetically tested to see what their best swimming events would be best for them.
