Bringing Silicon Valley into Schools: How to make students entrepreneurs of their own education

Bringing Silicon Valley into Schools: How to make students entrepreneurs of their own education | Per llegir | Scoop.it
The current education system needs to prepare students for a much more modern job market. Silicon Valley, and other business hubs around the world are a far cry from factories, shipyards and coal mines. Rather than looking for simple cogs to fit their machines, forward-thinking companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter try to install an ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ in employees, encouraging them to ‘fail fast, fail often’ and use creative thinking to come up with amazing new ideas and improve efficiency.

8 reflective questions to help any student think about their learning

8 reflective questions to help any student think about their learning | Per llegir | Scoop.it
Why the brain actually benefits from reflection is a matter of neurology, but the extensive research is clear: Prediction, reflection, and metacognition are pillars for the thoughtful classroom. The questions below were created to be, as much as possible, useful with most students at most ages and grade levels with a little rewording.

Perhaps most crucially, by shifting their reflection from content to thought, students have the chance to put themselves back at the center of the learning process. When they reflect, students reimagine what happened in both 1st and 3rd person–as they were seen, and as they saw through their own eyes. How? A sample response for a 7th or 8th grader might be:

I guess I was most creative today when we were given a chance to create our own metaphors for the ways rain forests help the planet “breathe.” Why? Maybe because it forced me to think about something visually, which meant we could come up with our own answers!

In reflecting, the student had to think both about their own feelings (when they felt something), and how they might be perceived (what others might consider ‘creative’).

Comprehensive guide to Concept Mapping

A concept map is a diagram or graphical tool that visually represents relationships between concepts and ideas. Most concept maps depict ideas as boxes or circles (also called nodes), which are structured hierarchically and connected with lines or arrows (also called arcs). These lines are labeled with linking words and phrases to help explain the connections between concepts.

Spend the first five minutes of each class focusing on your students as people. Then keep them engaged through the agency of makerspaces, PBL, or Genius Hour/20 Time.
David Donat's insight:

How cross-curricular lessons inspire Critical Thinking

How cross-curricular lessons inspire Critical Thinking | Per llegir | Scoop.it
Cross-curricular? Critical thinking? How do these rather different educational concepts work together, and why should we want them to be a part of our teaching practice? Let’s start with critical thinking, a skill we must consider to be a fundamental goal in all of our work as educators. President Obama publically identified critical thinking as a crucial 21st-century skill that learners of all ages need to master to be successful in both the educational arena and the ever-evolving global economy. Adding in the advice of old John Dewey, we see how learning experiences that stimulate thinking by having students engage in creating meaning out of a variety of facts, scenarios, and variables (rather than just memorizing a single, linear timeline or algorithm with no context or supportive background) puts the learner in the center of the learning process.

By using online tools to bring in multiple related concepts from across disciplines, we make the learning more authentic.

Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value?

Augmented and Virtual Reality: Where Is the Educational Value? | Per llegir | Scoop.it
Looking back through the archives of THE Journal, you can find articles about the potential of VR dating all the way back to 1999. So why have previous VR technologies failed to catch on in public schools? And are the consumer technologies being introduced today, such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, more likely to find a home in classrooms?

Good to see more articles about the role of VR and AR in the classroom.

Ben's curator insight, June 22, 2016 7:00 PM

Virtual Reality in the classroom provides a higher level of interactivity in subjects where both the instructor and students can explore together. With the rise in gaming VR devices, they are now becoming cheaper and more powerful in their capabilities. They can be used to explore geography, teach math, and even discover historic sites. This is coupled with their ability to create motivation through educational VR games.

Flexible classroom seating invites collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking by helping students manage their physical energy and comfort as they learn on their own terms.
David Donat's insight:

How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day.

L'article no té desperdici.

hem d'estar activament presents, connectats als nostres processos (sense distraccions al nostre cap) actuant i parlant connectats a les nostres emocions i  sentiments.

Està ben recollit, ben lligat i argumentat.
