Thinking Skills, Thinking Tools.

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning

Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning | Pensamiento crítico y su integración en el Curriculum | Scoop.it
Project-based learning may be the best vehicle for personalized learning as teachers move beyond "course-based" approaches and open the way for student-designed curriculum.

Not every teacher may be ready to jump into this type of personalization. To make it work, they'll be required to adopt a different teaching role. They'll need strong management skills and a commitment to disruptive innovation. In addition, the current constructs of the education system may hold us back. What if we could make this dream of personalized PBL a reality?

===> I say that we work toward it, creating a push on the system that demands change in the education of our students. <===

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, August 21, 9:13 PM

An art teacher and I (drama teacher) started to use a negotiated approach with students about 15 years ago.  By working with students to be aware of curriculum expectations and discussing "what would this look like" we assisted students with developingntheir own learnign pathways and expressions of their learning - in keeping with the legislated requirements of curriculum.  I've also noted over the years that elements of the International Baccalaureate - particularly the project work from MYP - reflects a similar approach.

Without reference to research literature, I'd speculate that this speaks to engagement, authenticity and relevance... and needn't be confined to K-12 contexts.... well-documented project work could be conducted outside the confines of formal classes and evidenced against formal assessment criteria.

Durriyyah Kemp's curator insight, August 22, 11:10 AM

Project-Based Learning is a great vehicle for allowing student to gain social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.  The five core competency skills for SEL (self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management) can be easily integrated into any project-based learning opportunity.

Strategies To Promote Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom

Strategies To Promote Critical Thinking in the Elementary Classroom | Pensamiento crítico y su integración en el Curriculum | Scoop.it

For us, critical thinking happens when students analyze and evaluate evidence, arguments, claims and beliefs. They can then learn how to make judgments and decisions based on others’ points of view, interpret information and draw conclusions.

enrique rubio royo's insight:

Michel J. Boustani's curator insight, June 16, 8:17 AM

Students (future adults) need to learn what is and how to critical thinking from their own discoveries. SO that they will earn the freedom of critical thinking in their own time, from their own realities... I like this paper, the subject is an endless work in progress for a better social collective and individual well being!

One of the most exciting ideas presented in the paper is what we truly believe to be the future of teacher preparation and ongoing development--micro-credentials, likely displayed as digital badges--that would signify accomplishment and measure and reward competency-based outcomes for educators.

There are three parts to becoming a teacher: qualification, socialization, and subjectation. The process in the article speaks about the first one and to much lesser extent to the second, but the three are overlapping and need each other. Yes, we become qualified to teach, we are socialized to teach, but do we ever consider ourselves teachers?

Content Curation Can Help Education System Breed Future Workskills

Content Curation Can Help Education System Breed Future Workskills | Pensamiento crítico y su integración en el Curriculum | Scoop.it

Enrique Rubio...

Robin Good: If you are interested in exploring content curation as a possible venue for innovating teaching and learning approaches, you will find lots of valuable information in this new article by @NancyW entitled Developing Future Workskills Through Content Curation.

In it she points to a study conducted last year, the Apollo Research Institute Future Workskills 2020, that identifies critical workskills needed for future jobs and how fitting "content curation" may be in cultivating and refining many of those.

She writes: "A closer look suggests that critical workforce skills identified in this \ study can be easily aligned with the skills practiced with content curation.

The skills a student employs to successfully curate information include curiosity, media literacy, ability to make connections across disciplines, information literacy, the ability to evaluate and understand perspective, synthesize and evaluate information, and a good dose of self-direction."

"Future Workskills 2020 suggests a monumental shift and change needs to begin now in our education system.

These skills can be developed through the process of content curation.

Content curation has the added benefit of helping students find their passions for and take ownership of their learning..."

Right on target. Recommended. 8/10
