Jeff Bezos, Drones and Megalomania - Huffington Post

Jeff Bezos, Drones and Megalomania - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Rumor has it that the future drones of Amazon Prime are a Cyber-Monday PR gimmick, sure to face insurmountable technical difficulties and never pass muster with the FAA. Who knows. And, whatever. Much more interesting is what Jeff Bezos' plan actually suggests about the culture that's drooling over it too much to ask whether it's a good idea.

Open thread: co-operatives – what's in store for 2014? - The Guardian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The co-operative movement has had a turbulent past few months; the Co-op Bank went into crisis and a member of Spain's Mondragon co-op faced bankruptcy. However, in this year's autumn statement the chancellor, George Osborne, vowed to support employee ownership and include tax breaks for social enterprises. Does this mean the future is bright for co-operatives and the social enterprise sector as a whole?

International Students Movement Platform | People's Assemblies Network | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The International Student Movement is riding a wave of global education protests. In 2010, British students struck back against austerity measures. In 2011, Chilean students frightened university administrators around the world by sparring with security forces in protest of neoliberal education policies. In 2012, Quebec universities organized the largest student strike in the country’s history: a successful six-month protest, including a 300,000-person demonstration, which halted proposed tuition hikes. Over the last few years, less-recognized student movements in Russia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Croatia, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Italy and Swaziland have helped fill in a now finely-pixelated picture of an emerging anti-austerity global student movement. And while the website wasn’t central in the organization of all of these actions, its developers hope that the site will increasingly help connect these national efforts, allowing more people to see how social ills from New York City to Athens share conspicuously similar symptoms.

Be Love > Do Good > Have Everything : on the difference between neutralists and synergists

Within a synergic community or what I call commUnity, humans seek to have WIN-WIN relationships with each other. We synergists believe in helping each other. We recognize that humans are mutually INTERdependent. We know that sometimes each one of us will need the help of others, and sometimes others will need our help.

The Internet of iThings: Apple's iBeacon Is Already In Almost 200 Million ... - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the summer I predicted that the micro-location iBeacon would be the most important new feature in iOS 7. Consumer awareness of the feature is low, but it is estimated to be available (potentially) on almost 200 million iOS devices that contain Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) right now. What’s missing are apps that give users compelling reasons to engage with what we can call theInternet of iThings.

Seven Ripoffs That Capitalists Would Like to Keep out of the Media

Seven Ripoffs That Capitalists Would Like to Keep out of the Media | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Tax-avoiding, consumer-exploiting big business leaders are largely responsible for these abuses. Congress just lets it happen. Corporate heads and members of Congress seem incapable of relating to the people that are being victimized, and the mainstream media seems to have lost the ability to express the views of lower-income Americans.

THE MONKEY CHRISTMAS

The Monkey Farm in Costa Rica is entirely volunteer-driven, unique monkey rescue farm that combines organic farming and permaculture with wildlife rescue. We have had real challenges to get our food production and other activities started because every year in January-March fires spread from the neighboring properties and destroy everything. This effectively evicts the howler and white-faced monkeys whose natural habitat the Ocotal area is. After three miserable fires we had to decide: either we pack our bags and leave or do something and ensure the fires won't spread.

Cooperative Firms as a New Mode of Production

Cooperative Firms as a New Mode of Production | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The importance of the notion of ‘the mode of production’ is emphasised by all those scholars who hold that the ‘history-as-totality’ approach is the core of Marx's theory of society. Among them, Gramsci argued that while scientific advancements could shed little light on the issues with which philosophers and economists had traditionally been concerned, concepts such as ‘social relations of production’ and ‘mode of production’ had provided valuable insights for philosophical and economic inquiry. Hence our interest in the question of whether a system of producer cooperatives would actually lead to the establishment of a new mode of production. Opinions in the matter diverge greatly, and major implications stem from the distinction between worker managed firms (WMFs) and labour managed firms (LMFs), where the latter strictly segregate capital incomes from labour incomes. We conclude that LMF cooperatives do implement a new mode of production because they reverse the typical capital–labour relation right within a capitalistic system. An additional major point addressed in some detail is the main contradiction in capitalism.

Desert of the Real

Desert of the Real | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In his book Collapse, Jarred Diamond argues that one reason societies fail is that  their elites are insulated from the negative impact of their own actions. Diamond focuses on Easter Island, where the overuse of wood products eventually destroyed its inhabitants’ survival prospects. That lesson applies equally to us, today. We lust for speed, perfection, control but, because we inhabit an abstract, digitially diminished world, we’re blind to their true cost.

jean lievens's insight:
"Excellent thought provoking lecture from John Thackara. I love his explanation of how we as human's are intimately connected to nature metabolically, hormonally, and at molecular, atomic, viral level. We interact continuously with living systems surrounding us. Time to design with this realisation at the front of all our minds."
