7 ways to shut down a climate change denier

7 ways to shut down a climate change denier | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On November 18, with the United Nations Global Warming Conference in Copenhagen fast approaching, U.S. Sen. James R. Inhofe (R–Okla.) took the floor of the Senate and proclaimed 2009 to be “The Year of the Skeptic.” Had the senator’s speech marked a new commitment to dispassionate, rational inquiry, a respect for scientific thought and a well-grounded doubt in ghosts, astrology, creationism and homeopathy, it might have been cause for cheer. But Inhofe had a more narrow definition of skeptic in mind: he meant “standing up and exposing the science, the costs and the hysteria behind global warming alarmism.”

Big Data on the Smart Grid: 2013 in Review and 2014 Outlook - Energy Collective | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"Big data" may be the most overused buzz-phrase in the smart grid industry today. But that doesn’t mean that managing, analyzing and deriving operational and customer value from the massive amounts of data being collected by utilities isn’t important and valuable -- or that utilities aren't spending on it. GTM Research has pegged the value of the global utility data analytics market at a cumulative $20 billion between 2013 and 2020, growing from an annual spend of $1.1 billion this year to nearly $4 billion by decade’s end.

David Graeber It is value that brings universes into being

Any theoretical term is an implicit statement about human nature. Anthropologiststend to be uncomfortable with this fact but it is nonetheless true. Even if one wereto make a statement as apparently innocuous as “ritual can take many forms inmany places,” one is still asserting that “ritual” is a meaningful cross-culturalcategory, implying—as pretty much any anthropological discussion of ritualinvariably does imply—that we can assume all human beings have engaged in somekind of ritual activity at some point or another, that ritual is an inherent aspect ofhuman sociality, even if there’s no scholarly consensus whatsoever as to what, precisely, a ritual is or what it says about us that we are all in some sense ritualproducing beings. And the same is true of any other theoretical term: kinship, authority, labor, symbol, the body, performance, or anything else.

The Peer Economy Will Transform Work (or at Least How We Think of It)

Erika Watson's curator insight, December 19, 2013 5:42 AM

Excerpt: "

Peer economy providers are also vulnerable but with a crucial factor that makes all the difference: They are a visible workforce, able to make these collective interests heard.

The economy of the future will not be the economy as it is now. The challenge before us is to reimagine what full work means, not based simply on how we’re used to conceiving of it, but based on a consideration of what we deem most valuable (independence, security, connectedness, etc.). "

Lays out the challenge but I'm not sure there is much sign that peer economy providers are either visible or beginning to make collective interests heard.

The peer economy provides independence, and the contemporary increased security of diversity of income, connectedness. But that security still remains too fragile and shallow for most.

Removing regulation, not governance!

If we want the city to produce a different outcome, it will take a different kind of organisation running it, responsible for it. The very idea of the city as a public good fundamentally rests on this. And the very idea of the sustainable city relies on understanding that the city is a public good.

The Age of Surprise: Predicting The Future Of Technology - PRPick.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the last few years several trends have begun to take shape, among them has been the transformation of the Internet as a form of basic content or information delivery to a fundamental social system at the heart of modern society. Yet this convergence of our physical and digital realities barely scratches the surface of the opportunities it holds for us.

Mr. Allaire’s analogy, which compares the projected expansion of digital currencies to the past development of Internet technology, is enticing. When the Mosaic browser, a forerunner to Netscape Navigator, was launched in 1993 its capabilities were limited. But it soon gave rise to more powerful competitors that pushed web access out to all corners of the globe.
