Assemblies emerging in Turkey: a lesson in democracy | ROAR | The Future of Occupy

Assemblies emerging in Turkey: a lesson in democracy | ROAR | The Future of Occupy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Something quite amazing is happening in Istanbul. In addition to the silent “standing man” actions around the country, people’s assemblies are slowly starting to emerge in different neighborhoods across the city. As in Spain, Greece and the Occupy encampments before, the protesters in Turkey are starting to counter-pose their own form of direct democracy to the sham of a democracy proposed by Erdogan’s authoritarian neoliberal state. If there was ever any doubt, this shows how deeply intertwined the global struggles truly are.

Noam Chomsky: We must defend the global commons against ... - Marcopolis | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I’ve visited Lebanon several times, moments of great hope, and also of despair, tinged with remarkable determination to overcome and to move forward.  The first time I visited – if that’s the right word – was exactly 60 years ago, almost to the day.  My wife and I were hiking in Israel’s northern Galilee one evening, when a jeep drove by on a road near us and someone called out that we should turn back: we’re in the wrong country.  We had, inadvertently, crossed the border, then unmarked, now I suppose bristling with lethal armaments.

An absolutely fascinating collaboration: Neuro Knitting. Artists Varvara Guljajeva and Mar Canet worked with Sebstian Mealla, a scientist from ‘the Music Technology Group’ in Barcelona, on the project. They use a knitting machine to make a scarf with colorwork patterns based on brainwave readings from EEG scans.

GovLab Post: Democratizing Policymaking Online: Liquid Feedback

GovLab Post: Democratizing Policymaking Online: Liquid Feedback | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This week, Beth Noveck kicked off her talk at the Personal Democracy Forum conference by reflecting on the the MoVimento 5 Stelle (M5S), Italy’s 5 Star Movement, and their use of Liquid Feedback (LQFB), a software for policymaking and political discussion. After its initial deployment by the German Pirate Party, the software has gained a lot of popularity over the past few years, and most recently it has been adopted by several M5S groups in regions such as  Lombardy, Lazio and Sicily. True to their principles of participatory democracy and free access to the internet and information (and in response to criticism about how they run their business), it is no surprise that these two parties have been searching for a platform to engage their members more directly. But is Liquid Feedback the answer?

Social media—from Facebook to Twitter—have made us more densely networked than ever. Yet for all this connectivity, new research suggests that we have never been lonelier (or more narcissistic)—and that this loneliness is making us mentally and physically ill. The Future of Civil Disobedience Online - io9

Infrastructure-based activism involves the creation of alternate systems to replace those that have been compromised by state or corporate information-gathering schemes. In other words, if the government is snooping on the internet, activists build a tool to make it harder for them to see everything. Tor, Diaspora, and indenti.ca are some examples of these projects, as are the guerrilla VPNs and network connections that often spring up to serve embattled areas, provided by activists in other countries.

“Aaron’s Law” Would Help Reform Our Awful Computer Crime Laws. Will Congress Pass It?

“Aaron’s Law” Would Help Reform Our Awful Computer Crime Laws. Will Congress Pass It? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On Thursday, Rep. Zoe Lofgren brought a bill to the floor of the House of Representatives that would reform certain provisions of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the controversial and outdated computer crime statute that I’ve criticizednumeroustimes in this space. The bill is dubbed “Aaron’s Law,” after Aaron Swartz, the computer programmer and digital advocate who committed suicide in January. It addresses the sections of the CFAA that allowed prosecutors to threaten Swartz with charges that could have earned him decades in prison—charges that may have contributed to Swartz’s decision to take his own life.

Peter Tatchell: Economic democracy – The next big idea?

The Occupy movements have put economic reform on the political agenda more successfully than any initiative in living memory. Bravo! Even if you disagree with the protesters, they’ve generated a much need public debate about the future structure and direction of our economy. It’s important that we don’t just accept the system as it is. Questioning and dreaming are valid too. Scepticism is healthy and legitimate. Given the broken economy, new alternative ideas are necessary - and may be our saving.

The Networked Society – Opportunities or threats | Opportunity ... | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The term The Networked Society is use by the global telecom equipment and service provider Ericsson. The term is used to depict their vision of the future use of communication technologies and it’s fundamental impact on our lives. The core of and basis for this prediction is a society where everything that can benefit from a connection will have one. We have all for many years seen futuristic and rather tech centric illustrations of a society fully utilizing the potential of IT  like the Networked Society Film by Ericsson, but also by many other IT and telecom companies. But these illustrations of the future do seem far less futuristic today, given the high penetration of smart devices and the general acceptance of IT in all parts of the society and age groups. The impact of telecom has for instance been essential to the development of Africa and in democratization movements around the globe.

Does The Sharing Economy Have a Shadow Side? - Fast Company | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The rise of the sharing economy has been chronicled in books and magazine stories. It's brought half-billion-dollar exits (Zipcar to Avis), and billion-dollar valuations with IPO rumors for some of its darlings (Airbnb, Etsy). It's spawned startups dedicated to exploiting excess capacity in areas as diverse as children's clothing (Thredup), errands (TaskRabbit), transportation (Lyft, RelayRides), evenhome-cooked meals.

Hancock's TED Talk, “The War on Consciousness”, was deliberately removed from YouTube: “Graham Hancock’s talk, again, shares a compelling and unorthodox worldview, but one that strays well beyond the realm of reasonable science. While attempting to critique the scientific worldview, he misrepresents what scientists actually think…” Chris Anderson, [TED]. After some debate, this presentation was not fully re-posted to TED’s site, but rather subjugated to a new, unseen basement corner on TED’s site, limiting its future visibility.

Privacy is precious, but 'core human value' goes too far - Financial Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sir, An unholy alliance between governments, keen to expand surveillance, and corporations, keen to empower their marketing departments, threatens “the core human value of privacy” warns Yochai Benkler (“Make privacy part of the transatlantic trade talks,” June 18). He is surely right that privacy is threatened, but whether a “core human value” is at stake is more debatable.

Google Glass is Orwellian, ridiculous, and ‘destroys people,’ Noam Chomsky says

“I feel we’re moving into a world that was described pretty accurately by one of the founders of Google,” Chomsky said. “Some reporter asked Eric Schmidt if this was an invasion of privacy … and he said ‘If you’re doing anything that you don’t want to be on the internet, you shouldn’t be doing it.’”
