The Heretic's Guide to Global Finance: Hacking the Future of Money

The Heretic's Guide to Global Finance: Hacking the Future of Money | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Finance, even in its most high-tech formulations, is rooted in ecological systems. A high-frequency trading hedge fund, for example, relies on electricity created by burning fossillised organic matter. It relies on employees, surviving via agricultural systems. It trades in company shares, given value by the actions of those companies’ employees using assets (like computers and telecommunications systems) that are all dependent (at some level) on mining, forestry, and other extractive industries.

Sharing economy to drive more policy changes - Monterey County Herald | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Websites and applications that let consumers rent out their home or give a stranger a ride in their car for a few bucks will drive sweeping changes in public policy in the coming year as cities and states rethink how they govern the so-called sharing economy.

The Reputation Economy | LEWIS PR

The Reputation Economy | LEWIS PR | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Joshua Klein is the author of Reputation Economics. In this book he demonstrates why technology changed the way we do business online in terms of authenticating. We are all used to using security codes, our address or social security number as a kind of authentication for doing business online. But when we look at the rise of Uber, AirBnB or Bitcoin, we rely more on the reputation and trustworthiness of the company or the person we are doing business with.

"discusses how politics and the "capitalist*" economic system of the United States has very much warped the initial vision and potential of a non-commercial democratic Internet. In it noted scholar and activist Robert W. McChesney does a good job of illustrating the "banana republic" -- that is the corporately-controlled -- status of the U.S. state.

Economies of Scale - P2P Foundation

Economies of Scale - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"The corporations would have you believe that the combination promises "economies of scale" -- that redundant positions can be eliminated, duplicate processes eliminated, volume discounts obtained from suppliers, and efficiencies obtained by combining operations. Anyone who has ever been through a combination can tell you that this almost never occurs. In fact, costs rise after the combination because of diseconomies of scale -- the larger the organization, the greater the hierarchy, the more the bureaucracy, and the more infrastructure is needed to keep it all connected. Small is agile. Large is clumsy. There are no efficiencies of scale. So why do these transactions still occur?

Following Bitcoin’s explosion in value, a wide range of alternative Crypto-Currencies have sprung up to create the first free market in banking and currency. Regardless of ones opinion on the subject, it is an interesting experiment to see everyday people creating their own currencies at a rate that has never been seen before on this planet.

Crypto at the OK Corral

Crypto at the OK Corral | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I’ve just finished a lecture tour of Australia on Bitcoin. I’ve been working on currency innovation since 2010, but it’s the rise of Bitcoin that has generated far greater attention, with my recent lectures even making national news. But Bitcoin is only a small part of the story. There are now over 140 adaptations or forks of the Bitcoin open source code to create new “coins.” Every week new ones are released. Some appear to be interesting innovations, some seem more like get-rich-quick schemes, and others may even aim at debunking the whole idea of cryptographic currency. The recent BBC article on a coin idea that would borrow rap star Kanye West’s name does seem like an attempt to lampoon this area of innovation, as there is no news value in that one idea amongst over 140 cryptographic currencies.
