Why TED matters more than ever in an age of digital democracy - The Guardian (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It always takes a while after TED to come to terms with what happened. It's supposed to get easier, but after my fifth year, I still have the same reaction. For me, the best way to think about TED is to compare it to an expedition in the mountains. Although it's not physical, it has many of the same attributes.

RealClearMarkets - A European Decision That Could Dismantle the Internet

RealClearMarkets - A European Decision That Could Dismantle the Internet | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In response to a recent legal decision in Europe, Google has released a new form for its European users that will allow them to request that links to certain articles about them be removed from the search engine. While European privacy advocates who have been pushing for a "right to be forgotten" may applaud this effort, the impact on the flow of information across the Internet is substantial. As Jonathan Zittrain of Harvard Law School puts it, "The most important harm of this decision is not to the search engine companies, but to the public at large, and its ability to find accurate public information." Rather than an open and public exchange of information, Europe's new law injects an online censor to govern the accessibility of freely available public information.

Social Innovation Summit 2014: The Power of Peer Impact

Social Innovation Summit 2014: The Power of Peer Impact | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Exactly a year ago United Nation's Assistant Secretary-General Robert C. Orr declared, "We will innovate, then we will renovate." At Social Innovation Summit 2014, renovation indeed was in full swing. There was a tinge of nostalgia letting go of General Assembly Hall giving life to a metaphor as the UN rebuilds itself, so too, the financial landscape is under reconstruction as referred to from "the great disruption" toward "the great distribution."

David Graeber: “Spotlight on the financial sector did make apparent just how bizarrely skewed our economy is in terms of who gets rewarded” | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

David Graeber is an American anthropologist who teaches at the London School of Economics. He is the author of the classic “Debt: The First Five Thousand Years” and played an important role in the launching of Occupy Wall Street. Last year, he wrote a much-discussed essay asking what happened to society’s old promise of more leisure time for workers; for the tasks that have come to occupy the hours that were once promised to be ours, Graeber invented the delicate and slightly obscure label, “bullshit jobs.”

Crowdsurfer navigates the uncertain waters of crowd funding - USA TODAY | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A problem shared is a problem solved. That's the theory behind crowdsourcing — people coming together to respond to demand for just about anything, from financial services and labor to information sharing and materials. A subset of that, crowdfunding — any finance that's been aggregated online — is an exploding online marketplace that rang up a whopping $5 billion in transactions last year.
