Uber's London trouble is just the latest squabble over the sharing economy - The Guardian

Uber's London trouble is just the latest squabble over the sharing economy - The Guardian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

When 10,000 taxi drivers promised to descend on Trafalgar Square to protest against cab hire firm Uber, the company responded by launching UberTaxi, extending an olive branch to the angry cabbies (and undercutting competitor Hailo in the process). But even if it succeeds in winning round some drivers, it still has legal issues to contend with: the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association accuses the firm of running illegal taxi meters, thanks to the way its app automatically calculates the fare using GPS data at the end of a trip.

Financial Crisis Or Monetary Crisis?

Financial Crisis Or Monetary Crisis? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Spanish economist, author and complementary currency activist Susana Martín Belmonte exposes the false assumption that has led to a fundamentally misguided diagnosis of the current financial crisis; the false assumption being that money needs to exist before it can be lent, when exactly the opposite is true. After years of research into the global monetary system, Martín Belmonte concluded that what is needed is a healthy, alternative monetary and financial system that favours the real economy rather than the speculative economy. In this piece, she lists several proposals to that end, including her own, which she calls “R-economy,” a monetary system based on nominative digital money created free of interest.

Acquisitive Society - P2P Foundation

Acquisitive Society - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"In his brilliant book the Acquisitive Society, written about 1920, RH Tawney argues that Democracy is an evolutionary construct emerging to greater fullness over the past 1100 years. The first phase of this evolution is the charter to trade in exchange for taxes, warlords granted this and the guild markets but needed to be bribed. This was a bloody fight in most places just to secure commercial rights at all and even these thank god were regulated and not free market. This town charter and city charter historic phase was a battle of hundreds of years. Freedom of belief then kicks in with the Reformation, then civil rights thereafter with the English Commonwealth a key milestone but also one that increasingly rolls back the commons. Civil rights and the suffrage struggle for middle class men, the working class men with property, then more universally for women but not people of colour struggles as a battle for centuries right up to Mandela.

What Uber Should Do With the Money - Bloomberg

By now, you’ve likely heard of Uber’s staggering US$1.2 billion funding round that values the business at US$ 18.2 billion. One can debate the merits of the valuation, but whatever your opinion, the folks at Uber will have a ton of resources to fund their next strategic move. So to us the interesting question is what Uber should do with the money and, perhaps more importantly, what it shouldn’t.

Should We Fight the System or Be the Change? | Dissent Magazine

Should We Fight the System or Be the Change? | Dissent Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It is an old question in social movements: Should we fight the system or “be the change we wish to see”? Should we push for transformation within existing institutions, or should we model in our own lives a different set of political relationships that might someday form the basis of a new society?

" The challenge for those who wish to produce social change is to balance the competing impulses of the two approaches in creative and effective ways—so that we might experience the power of a community that is committed to living in radical solidarity, as well as the joy of transforming the world around us."

The FLOK Society Project: Making The Good Life Possible Through Good Knowledge | Techdirt

The FLOK Society Project: Making The Good Life Possible Through Good Knowledge | Techdirt | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

One of the most striking and important developments in the world of technology over the last two decades or so has been the rise of an alternative mode of production that is open, collaborative and global. This began in the world of software, with Richard Stallman's GNU project, but has now been extended to the realms of text, data, science and hardware, among others. The free sharing of information to form a kind of digital commons, which lies at the heart of these projects, has also been applied to business, albeit in the modified form of collaborative consumption -- things like Airbnb. These different manifestations of fundamentally similar ideas have sprung up in a largely uncoordinated way, but an interesting question is whether they could be drawn together into a unified approach, applied to a whole country, say. That's what Ecuador's FLOK Society(original in Spanish) has been exploring. "FLOK" is derived from "free", "libre" and "open knowledge"; here's how David Bollier, an expert on the commons, describes the project:
