Transition Proposals Towards a Commons-Oriented Economy and Society

In the context of the Ecuadorian transition project towards a open commons-based knowledge society, see Floksociety.org, and to complement the prior analysis of three competing economic models in the age of peer production, I have formulated some transition proposals, on how to get from Phase 2, emerging peer production in the context of the dominance of cognitive and financial capitalism, to Phase 3, a mature peer production economy associated with a ethical economy and a partner state.

Hackathons for the rest of us - Computerworld Australia

Hackathons, of course, are organized marathon hacking sessions with rules, goals and prizes. Conceptually, they are reminiscent of county fairs, except what's submitted to the judges was created during the event. Hackathon organizers could be hoping to get developers to play with a new interface they are introducing, or write apps for a new phone they are producing -- or the idea might be to just have fun, with no particular agenda.

In front of roughly 20 members of the school’s community, Humphrey outlined a narrative tracing his evolution as an artist. The art critic, who also dabbles in music, described the changing nature of his work relating to the concepts of inter-subjectivity, collaboration and voice. During the lecture, Humphrey shared slides of his work and explained the creative process behind each piece — which his colleagues at the Art School said he did with honesty and openness uncharacteristic of many in the profession.

28 Ingenious Solutions To Our Climate Woes - Co.Exist

28 Ingenious Solutions To Our Climate Woes - Co.Exist | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Three years ago, MIT's Climate CoLab attempted an ambitious feat: crowdsourcing an international climate agreement, with the results presented to the U.N., Congress, and the Department of Energy. The 2011 entrants were given a different challenge (figuring out how to evolve the economy to deal with climate change), but with the same promise of presenting ideas to influential governmental organizations. This was back in the good old days when people still had a shred of hope that national governments could come to some sort of reasonable climate agreement. Those days are long gone.

Open Source Hard Ware, a definition and a statement of principles - Wired

Open Source Hard Ware, a definition and a statement of principles - Wired | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Open source hardware is hardware whose design is made publicly available so that anyone can study, modify, distribute, make, and sell the design or hardware based on that design. The hardware’s source, the design from which it is made, is available in the preferred format for making modifications to it. Ideally, open source hardware uses readily-available components and materials, standard processes, open infrastructure, unrestricted content, and open-source design tools to maximize the ability of individuals to make and use hardware. Open source hardware gives people the freedom to control their technology while sharing knowledge and encouraging commerce through the open exchange of designs.

There’s a debate going on inside the Hadoop community.
