Where hardware meets software: Fablab was born to revitalize Tainan | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Speaking of cultural and creative industry, historic sites, gourmet snacks and old houses, it reminds people of Tainan. Tainan offers more than these features; this city is full of technological talents who need more opportunities to stand out. TDCP-Tainan Digital Creative Park(台南數位文創園區), located in the center of Tainan city, is operated by Tainan city government(台南市政府) and Association of Digital Culture Taiwan (台灣數位文化協會) combining the concepts of Co-working Space and Fablab. TDLP is expected to become the strongest backup for entrepreneurs in Tainan through excellent space planning and also a learning community for locals. PunNode had an exclusive interview with Ricky Feng, the Deputy Executive Officer of Association of Digital Culture Taiwan, to talk about TDCP-Tainan Digital Creative Park (PunPlace Fablab).

Joe Mathews: 'Sharing economy' poses risks for California - Sacramento Bee

Joe Mathews: 'Sharing economy' poses risks for California - Sacramento Bee | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I have learned the hard way, as father to three small boys, that sharing causes conflict. Ask humans to play with the same toy at the same time, and it won’t take long for a fight to break out. The smart move is to find duplicates of that toy, or to urge interested parties to “take turns.”

That’s why I fear the much-celebrated “sharing economy” – the catch-all name for “peer-to-peer” firms, many based in California, that connect people for the purposes of distributing, sharing and reusing goods and services – is likely to produce more fights than profits. And that would embroil our state in political, legal, commercial and environmental battles.

Cloud computing - where storage facilities are provided on demand over the internet from shared data centres - enables effective research collaboration to blossom. Rather than having to purchase a cluster of computers or struggle to find space at the lab, researchers can outsource their computing storage needs to remote facilities in the cloud and make this data accessible to colleagues.

Licensed taxi drivers took to the streets en masse earlier in the month to demonstrate against the disruptive power of Uber*. Until this ‘unfortunate’ piece of PR (in an ironic twist, the number of users of the Uber app in the UK rose 850%) it is probable many in the UK would not have heard of the app nor the economic model it represents, the “Sharing Economy”.

Selling an Open-Source Hardware Product on Tindie

Selling an Open-Source Hardware Product on Tindie | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Going from an idea for an hardware product to actually making money from it can be a long process. You need to go through design, manufacturing, build a website to sell it … the length of the process can really be a reason not to start for many people. However, thanks to a lot of tools that are available nowadays, it is getting easier and easier to have a tangible product on sale on the web.

Yes, Airbnb Has a Dark Side and California Could Be a Battleground - City Watch | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

California’s courts are already too crowded to handle basic functions—much less a host of new claims and litigation sparked by sharing enterprises. And our political system, with its crushing combination of low voter participation and big money, simply can’t produce definitive, democratically legitimate answers on the big new policy questions posed by all this sharing.

A digital campaign for European Citizens' Initiatives

A digital campaign for European Citizens' Initiatives | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Social networks are an ECI’s best allies. If the campaign does not take off on social networks, it will never take off at all. To increase a campaign’s virality, we are designing the “donation for social-reach” feature. Through it, a user can donate to an ECI, and we will then transform this donation into a sponsored publication on Facebook for the ECI. This feature can dramatically leverage the number of signatories. Why? First of all, sponsoring a publication on Facebook allows for a very precise target of different segments of supporters (country, interest, age, etc.). The conversion rate, thanks to sponsored publication, is very high.
