At Personal Democracy Forum, Snowden & Co. Turn Focus To Encryption - PBS MediaShift | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Just as the Personal Democracy Forum (PDF) was commencing last year, news broke that a young ex-CIA analyst working under contract for the National Security Agency in Hawaii disclosed reams of classified documents to the media. The leak was blasted by the Obama administration as a massive detriment to America’s national security and applauded by civil libertarians as a whistle blown on a secret, statist, and suspicion-less surveillance program.

The Power of Indigenization - MorungExpress

For indigenous peoples the power of culture stems from the saying that “I am because of who we are.” When the collective self-conscious expressions reflect the power of the will of the people, it is perhaps safe to say that the self-conscious expressions of the will of the people form an essential part of a culture. Culture as philosophy, is lived and celebrated in a society and demonstrates a peoples’ collective wisdom, history, traditions, worldviews and its capabilities and capacities in confronting issues of justice and peace.

EconoMonitor : Great Leap Forward » MMT Does Do Policy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I’ve seen some pretty bizzarre claims about MMTers. They are “tea partiers”, “barely left of center”, who “are not interested in policy”, who “ignore inequality”, who “are only interested in reducing taxes”. “MMTers ignore the fraud of the banksters.” They are at best “one issue” advocates for a particular view on money, taxes, and employment. I have no idea where critics get this stuff. I’m convinced they make it up. Ignorance or dishonesty; probably both.

A New Theory of Growth

A New Theory of Growth | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For most of human history, creativity was held to be a privilege of supreme beings, initially, the gods who shaped the heavens and the earth, and then it was human beings who were the creators and not the helpless, dependent subjects of the wrath of the gods. We switched our views as we began to understand how the world worked. Whether this will help the human race or cause its downfall is debatable. But it would help if we realized the responsibility that comes with the new role.

Pick-and-place (PNP) machines are the robots that grab and drop tiny components onto circuit boards. Designed to make thousands of boards an hour, these super-fast machines are part of the multi-part ballet that is modern manufacturing. And they’re amazingly expensive – sometimes reaching into the millions of dollars.

From Potholes to Policies: Technology, Civic Engagement, and the Path to Peer-Produced Governance | PublicCEO

From Potholes to Policies: Technology, Civic Engagement, and the Path to Peer-Produced Governance | PublicCEO | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There’s been tremendous energy behind the movement to change the way that local governments use technology to better connect with residents. Civic hackers, Code for America Fellows, concerned residents, and offices such as ours, the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics in Boston, are working together to create a more collaborative environment in which these various players can develop new kinds of solutions to urban challenges. In many cities, you can now find out via text message when your bus is coming, taking uncertainty out of your commute. With StreetBump, your phone can report rough stretches of road to the City automatically as you drive over them. Data policies have made available an unprecedented volume of information on safety, health and other pressing urban issues. We often talk about strengthening the relationshipbetween citizen and government; these innovations are pointing in that direction and, hopefully, building trust between the public and their local governments.

Peer Production License - P2P Foundation

Peer Production License - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Stefan Meretz criticizes the radical copyleft model proposed by Kleiner as being simplistic and in general incorrect, based on categories from David Ricardo that, Meretz argues, have been superseded by Marx’s analysis. The main criticism presented by Meretz is that Kleiner focuses too much in the aspects of ownership (particularly of the means of production) and circulation, while considering production itself to be a neutral sphere. Indeed, his criticism of property as “theft” only refers to the “rent”9 extracted by commercial companies exploiting wage labor, but not to sale of the commodities on the market. For Meretz, the reappropriation of the means of production is, of course, a necessary step to promote a more equal distribution of wealth. Yet, it will only succeed in transforming society to the extent that it also involves a change in the mode of production, to go beyond the logic of exploitation and exchange; without this additional transformation, worker-owned collectives tend to succumb to external pressures and end up behaving quite similarly to wage-labour based companies.10

Self-Determination as Anti-Extractivism: How Indigenous Resistance Challenges World Politics

Self-Determination as Anti-Extractivism: How Indigenous Resistance Challenges World Politics | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Indigeneity is an unusual way to think about International Relations (IR). Most studies of world politics ignore Indigenous perspectives, which are rarely treated as relevant to thinking about the international (Shaw 2008; Beier 2009). Yet Indigenous peoples are engaging in world politics with a dynamism and creativity that defies the silences of our discipline (Morgan 2011). In Latin America, Indigenous politics has gained international legitimacy, influencing policy for over two decades (Cott 2008; Madrid 2012). Now, Indigenous political movements are focused on resisting extractive projects on autonomous territory from the Arctic to the Amazon (Banerjee 2012; Sawyer and Gómez 2012). Resistance has led to large mobilized protests, invoked international law, and enabled alternative mechanisms of authority. In response, governments have been busy criminalizing Indigenous claims to consultation that challenge extractive models of development. Indigenous opposition to extractivism ultimately promotes self-determination rights, questioning the states’ authority over land by placing its sovereignty into historical context. In that sense, Indigeneity is a valuable approach to understanding world politics as much as it is a critical concept to move beyond state-centrism in the study of IR.

Re-Politicising Participatory Design in the Fairphone Project - P2P Foundation

Re-Politicising Participatory Design in the Fairphone Project - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"This exploratory paper is a contribution to the discussion of the re-politisation of Participatory Design. After a brief introduction of this Scandinavian design tradition, the Fairphone, a sustainable and fair mobile phone, is introduced as a case to rethink design as politics. Concern for planetary destruction, as a result of climate change, motivates the discussion of Tony Fry's notion of redirective design in the analysis of the Fairphone. Is the Fairphone just 'less bad' or is it paradigmatic example of an alternative technological vision? There are many lessons to be learned from Fairphone, not just by Participatory Design. Most importantly, Fairphone shows the importance of relating the things we help design to futures that become possible or impossible. Participatory Design, with its focus on democratic practices and 'having a say', needs to find ways to bring the voices of future generations into today's design practices." Bitcoin And Beyond- A Cautionary Tale From Virtual World | OS | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Bitcoin is incredibly risky because it’s not endorsed by any government, commodity market or recognised as an asset. It has no genuine value in and of itself. Though Bitcoin has revolutionary potential, but will always be risky because it is an off- base technology whose creators are largely unknown. No matter how much acceptance it gets amongst businesses, it will operate under unknown regulatory environment until a global authority takes control of it. If IMF or the World Bank forms a body to secure this currency against some tangible and exchangeable asset then I might think about it.
