Innovation, Meet Regulation: Professional Services Start-Ups Test Age-Old Boundaries

Innovation, Meet Regulation: Professional Services Start-Ups Test Age-Old Boundaries | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
This week’s Supreme Court ruling against Internet TV start-up Aereo has shone a spotlight on the continued tension between innovation and regulation. This constant strain between technologies that disrupt the status quo and regulations designed to level the playing field is becoming a huge issue for businesses. The topic gets a lot of attention in the consumer space, but the tenuous relationship between innovation and regulation also is becoming a focal point in the professional services space.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Putting the “Sharing” Back into the Sharing Economy

Adam W. Parsons of www.sharing.org, writing for dissidentvoice.org, provides a clear explanation of the encroaching enclosure of the commons and tendency for existing social relationships to become monetized, ironically under the monicker of the ‘sharing economy’, and suggests ways in which true P2P sharing matrices can be strengthened.

The Buzz: UC still studying the sharing economy - Fresno Bee

The Buzz: UC still studying the sharing economy - Fresno Bee | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As lawmakers and regulators work to create rules for an emerging sharing economy, the University of California system is grappling with its own set of safety and liability concerns when employees use popular services like Uber, Lyft and Airbnb.

It appeared earlier this week that UC had banned staff members from using the online-based services after a UCLA administrator emailed top campus officials a notice that the university was prohibiting such tools while traveling on business. The decision from the UC general counsel was prompted by “concerns that these services are not fully regulated and do not protect users to the same extent as a commercially regulated business,” the email said.

Internet of Things Toilet Uploads Events to the Cloud (Raspberry PI)

Internet of Things Toilet Uploads Events to the Cloud (Raspberry PI) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

How does it work? – An aquarium liquid level sensor float switch detects toilet tank level; flushing lowers the level closing the switch. A photo cell located in socket (blind hole) of the toilet paper holder spindle mounting arm detects when the spindle is removed to change out the toilet paper (letting light hits the photo cell, thus "closing the switch").

Common Libraries - P2P Foundation

Common Libraries - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

""We believe there is an urgent and pressing need to evolve libraries so that they may serve as bastions of a 21st century knowledge commons, functioning as trusted and impartial platforms for the production, exchange and consumption of knowledge and know-how. We are therefore using our expertise in design, technology, community engagement and social enterprise to work closely with library service users and providers to that end. Our ultimate aim is to empower people to co-design and deliver new library services in our increasingly open source society, such that they are responsive to technological advancement and fast-changing local needs, as well as positioned to make the most of emergent socio-economic opportunities. The intention, then, is to revitalise the public library ethos and render library services more relevant, useful and sustainable in their appeal to (and involvement of) broad-ranging audiences in our digital age."

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

You probably don’t know me, but like you I am one of those .01%ers, a proud and unapologetic capitalist. I have founded, co-founded and funded more than 30 companies across a range of industries—from itsy-bitsy ones like the night club I started in my 20s to giant ones like Amazon.com, for which I was the first nonfamily investor. Then I founded aQuantive, an Internet advertising company that was sold to Microsoft in 2007 for $6.4 billion. In cash. My friends and I own a bank. I tell you all this to demonstrate that in many ways I’m no different from you. Like you, I have a broad perspective on business and capitalism.

After Piketty, the ownership revolution | Al Jazeera America

After Piketty, the ownership revolution | Al Jazeera America | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Now that the first round of intellectual debris left in the wake of French economist Thomas Piketty’s explosive best-seller “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” has begun to settle, it may be time to look more closely at the gaping hole it has left not only in political-economic analysis but also in conventional political strategy. After Piketty documented long-running trends that have turned over ever-increasing shares of national income to the owners of capital at the expense of the vast majority, the best solution he could muster was what he termed a utopian idea: a global tax on capital. Liberal economists, for their part, have largely rolled out the usual list of progressive tax reforms, often conveniently forgetting to confront the extraordinary political obstacles that stand in the way of any one policy remotely powerful enough to tackle the forces Piketty documents.

Why the Best Creators Collaborate | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In content marketing, Buffer is the proverbial “Lil Wayne.” As they were just starting out, the social sharing start-up had content everywhere, and to a lesser extent, they still do. Their co-founders Leo and Joel took an incredibly aggressive approach to guest blogging. For months it seemed like their content was popping up everywhere, infusing a variety of different sites with their unique style. This period is very reminiscent of lil wayne’s 2007-2008 onslaught, and had a similar effect.

Sharing economy will produce its share of fights - SFGate | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I have learned the hard way, as father to three small boys, that sharing causes conflict. Ask humans to play with the same toy at the same time, and it won't take long for a fight to break out. The smart move is to find duplicates of that toy or to urge interested parties to "take turns."
