The group will also seek to create a Unicode-approved bitcoin symbol, an issue that has long been debated by the bitcoin community.

Without a Unicode symbol, there is no option for displaying a symbol in a standard computer typeface. While seemingly small, many community members have argued that the issue could hinder long-term adoption, as both online and print media are forced to use non-standard workarounds.

The leading symbols that will be considered for bitcoin are B, ฿ and Ƀ, though the Bitcoin Foundation said it will seek to involve the community in its ultimate decision.

“The working group will deploy a consensus-based process for reaching an agreement for the official currency symbol,” the foundation said.

The Next Great Internet Disruption: Authority and Governance | David Bollier

The Next Great Internet Disruption: Authority and Governance | David Bollier | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As the Internet and digital technologies have proliferated over the past twenty years, incumbent enterprises nearly always resist open network dynamics with fierce determination, a narrow ingenuity and resistance.  It arguably started with AOL (vs. the Web and browsers), Lotus Notes (vs. the Web and browsers) and Microsoft MSN (vs. the Web and browsers, Amazon in books and eventually everything) before moving on to the newspaper industry (Craigslist, blogs, news aggregators, podcasts), the music industry (MP3s, streaming, digital sales, video through streaming and YouTube), and telecommunications (VoIP, WiFi).  But the inevitable rearguard actions to defend old forms are invariably overwhelmed by the new, network-based ones.  The old business models, organizational structures, professional sinecures, cultural norms, etc., ultimately yield to open platforms.

Ethify Values | Ethify | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
People live along different values. The more diverse the more tolerance we need to invest to get along. Historically, there have been repeated attempts to teach values, by fiat, conventions and basic laws.  Companies go through so-called corporate image processes to define their value systems. Various crises have provoked calls for a global debate on values. The Ethify values represent a reasonable lifestyle, free from any denomination.

Book of the Day: Occupy Finance | P2P Foundation

“This book is our reckoning. Some of us have long experience in the world of finance, having worked in banks or hedge funds. Others of us are teachers, lawyers, students, or Teamsters who started out with a limited understanding of “securitization” or “credit default swaps” but have taught ourselves about these instruments because we recognize their importance within our current economy. We have found that you do not need a PhD in economics to understand what is happening. Contrary to what the 1% would have us believe, the way things are is not the way they have to be, and most importantly — not the way they should be.”

An Economics Fit for Purpose in a Finite World « Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy

An Economics Fit for Purpose in a Finite World « Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Causation is both bottom-up and top-down: material cause from the bottom, and final cause from the top, as Aristotle might say. Economics, or as I prefer, “political economy,” is in between, and serves to balance desirability (the lure of right purpose) with possibility (the constraints of finitude). We need an economics fit for purpose in a finite and entropic world.

How ‘social salary’ will fuel the sharing economy - Virgin.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Github, Quora and Wikipedia are examples of platforms that create immense value by crowdsourcing skills and labor through collaborative social processes. Newcastle Web Consulting's curator insight, October 7, 2014 3:55 PM

In the document, the FBI notes that because Bitcoin combines cryptography and a peer-to-peer architecture to avoid a central authority, contrary to how digital currencies such as eGold and WebMoney operated, law enforcement agencies have more difficulty identifying suspicious users and obtaining transaction records.

Though the Bureau expresses confidence that authorities can still snag some suspects who use third-party Bitcoin services that require customers to submit valid identification or banking information in order to convert their bitcoins into real-world currencies, it notes that using offshore services that don’t require valid IDs can thwart tracking by law enforcement.
