Autonomy Region Rojava - P2P Foundation

Autonomy Region Rojava - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"This region – which consists of three geographically disconnected enclaves along the Turkish border – strategically used the deteriorating situation to declare self-rule in July 2012 and has since been celebrated as the “Rojava Revolution” within the Kurdish Movement associated around the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The population of Rojava, which has long been a stronghold of the PKK, is predominantly made up of Kurds – both Muslim and Yezidi[1] – as well as Arabs, Christian Assyrians, Armenians, Turkmen and Chechens. The desire for some form of self-determination especially among the Kurds was triggered through decades of denial of basic citizenship rights under the Assad-regime.

HowStuffWorks "Keynes and the Leisure Society"

HowStuffWorks "Keynes and the Leisure Society" | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Economist John Maynard Keynes is credited, along with Adam Smith and a few select others, with founding modern economics. Keynes provided the foundation for macroeconomics, the study of economies on the whole, including interest rates, employment, budgets and many other factors. Keynes revolutionized economics and its forecasts, and when he made the predictions in his 1930 essay, "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren," people listened.

Debunking six myths about open access scientific publishing | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Open access delivered by journals is called “gold” open access and open access delivered by repositories is called “green” open access. The myth asserts that all open access is gold , even for peer-reviewed articles. It has been false since the birth of open access, and yet it remains a tenacious and widespread misconception. When Bad Things Happen to Good Robots

When Bad Things Happen to Good Robots | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On May 10th of this year, an unfortunate message appeared on the blog of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute’s Kermedic Trench Expedition. Nereus, the hybrid autonomous and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of diving to some of the deepest locations on earth, was lost. As the crew was completing a productive two-hour dive, the camera feed abruptly went black and communication was lost. The team waited throughout the night for signs of life, until floating pieces of debris confirmed their worst fears. Nereus had imploded under pressure. As the crew noted in their message, this type of equipment failure is always a risk when you’re working in the deep ocean. The hadal zone is unforgiving and unmerciful.
