Burning man 2014

I was invited by Sander van Doorn’s team to join them to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada USA to capture his experience in the best way possible. Although this was his first time (and mine too) attending the event, the video gives a pretty good idea on what the event was like for a DJ (and hopefully other attendees as well). This video was not made for commercial use, only to capture Sander’s precious BM moments (which, according to Sander himself, were life changing) and to be able to share them with his friends & fans.

A Cryptocurrency Backed By Solar Energy

A Cryptocurrency Backed By Solar Energy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Cryptocurrency, sometimes referred to as digital currency or alternative currency, has been making waves in the news lately, mostly due to the rapid rise in value of Bitcoin. But there are other cryptocurrencies out there that are less well-known, including one new digital currency that is backed by the generation of solar electricity.

I don't get Uber labeling, or Uber drivers expectations | Stop

I must be missing something. Seriously. Please explain it to me. First, I don’t get how Uber is still called or classified, or more exactly why so many people seem to continue to let Uber or anybody else get away with it. Second, I don’t get titles and posters like these about “Uber strikes” or “Uber unfairness”.

Emerging Ownership Revolution - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"These models embody a coherent school of design a common form of organization that brings the living concerns of the human and ecologi cal communities into the world of property rights and economic power. It’s an emerging archetype yet to be recognized as a single phenomenon because it has yet to have a single name. Hannah Arendt observed that a stray dog has a better chance of surviving if it’s given a name. We might try calling this a family of generative ownership designs. Together they form the foundation for a generative economy.

The Isle of Man is definitely taking the lead when it comes to cryptocurrency-related initiatives. Many experts are expecting the island to become a major player in the industry and overshadow hot spots such as Luxembourg and Singapore, notably due to the optimistic approach that has been taken by the Government towards digital currencies.

“Up until now, cryptocurrencies have held great potential, but it hasn’t always coincided with a practicality that would alleviate [social] ills. Certain elements such as bypassing the need for central banks are steps along the way, but there was something missing. A holistic social and economic system is urgently needed to address the inequalities inherent in the current system.”

Jean Lievens: Build Your Own Micro-Factory -- Freedom Through Inexpensive Open Source Everything | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
At the root of Gershenfeld’s course is a list of machines. These are not exotic, multi-million dollar machines, although you can certainly spend a pretty penny on the top end models in each category. Rather, these devices, with the possible exception of the 3d printer are all fairly well known quantities. Gershenfeld’s Fabrication Laboratory (Fab-Lab, for short), networks these various machines and makes them work together. He does that in a space about the size of a two-car garage.

Occupy Democracy is not considered newsworthy. It should be

Occupy Democracy is not considered newsworthy. It should be | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
From last Tuesday, Parliament Square was wrapped in wire mesh. In one of the more surreal scenes in recent British political history, officers with trained German shepherds stand sentinel each day, at calculated distances across the lawn, surrounded by a giant box of fences, three metres high – all to ensure that no citizen enters to illegally practice democracy. Yet few major news outlets feel this is much of a story.

A well-credentialed computer geek, Dan, on that winter morning in 2010, had been on Facebook for five years, since he was 16. His addiction to it annoyed him. Fungus Could Be the Key to Avoiding a Global Food Crisis | WIRED

Fungus Could Be the Key to Avoiding a Global Food Crisis | WIRED | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
According to a United Nations report, climate change is poised to decimate the global food supply, with agricultural production expected to decline as much as 2 percent each decade for the rest of this century. Meanwhile, the world population will only increase, almost certainly driving up demand for these crops by as much as 14 percent every decade. That means food prices will soar, communities plagued by hunger will go even hungrier, and, many experts fear, countries will fight for food, just as they have for oil.

Burning Man as a Commons | P2P Foundation

Burning Man as a Commons | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Burning Man festival held every year on the desolate salt flats of Nevada is usually associated with the culturally avant tech crowd of the Bay Area – an image that is accurate as far as it goes. But the event is really much richer in implication than that. Burning Man is a rare space in modern industrial culture that actually invites people to give expression to some of their deepest artistic impulses and cultural fantasies while requiring them to show significant self-responsibility, cooperation and social concern. It is an immersive enactment of a different spirit of living that actually carries over into “real life” after the event itself.

3D Printer Builds Homes From Mud In Impoverished Areas | IFLScience

3D Printer Builds Homes From Mud In Impoverished Areas | IFLScience | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Nearly one billion people around the globe are homeless or live in substandard housing. In the era of 3D printing, some have addressed this crisis through quickly built concrete buildings. While this method would create a secure dwelling, delivering the raw materials and bulky printer increases the cost significantly, reducing its feasibility. The Italian 3D printing company WASP may have solved this problem by developing an easily-transportable machine that can quickly create dwellings out of mud and natural fibers—materials already available where the houses will be built.

The dangerous American myth of corporate spirituality

The dangerous American myth of corporate spirituality | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella gave some shocking advice to a young businesswoman who was concerned that her male peers were passing her up for promotions: Don’t question the systemic sexism of corporate America, just trust in “good karma” to get you ahead. While his attitude made waves in the blogosphere, in fact it accurately represents a form of spirituality that is becoming popular in the West.

Open Access Isn't Just About Open Access - EFF

Open Access Isn't Just About Open Access - EFF | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Let's all take a step back, though. Much of the open access movement is forward thinking, offering solutions and policy changes that will help improve access to future scholarship and research. This is crucial, but if we want real and meaningful open access, we must look backward as well. Many of us need access to the trove of existing and still very relevant material that is alreadylocked up behind paywalls. This need has driven individuals to try to make such knowledge openly available—whether by sharing research articles with peers, or by doing whatever it takes to access and analyze the corpus of our collective scholarship.
