Against The Tide, a Mass Effect fan animation

This project is a tribute and my way of saying farewell to Mass Effect and to my Commander Shepard. It's a collaboration with my sibling J.L. Solidum. The look of the animation was inspired by the opening credits of Casino Royale and the ending credits of 300. All in all it took us four months to make.

Why discussions on cyber snooping have been so painful - Aljazeera.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The recent discussions of US intelligence agencies intercepting people’s traffic have dominated headlines the world over. There was a fairly strong outcry in the US over "domestic spying". The NSA (who are famously silent) proclaimed loudly that they rarely spy on US citizens without good cause (unless they were communicating with foreigners.)

P2P and Marxism III — The limits of P2P | How can we change society?

P2P and Marxism III — The limits of P2P | How can we change society? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the previous parts of this article, peer-to-peer production was presented as a radical new way of organising production and different from other forms of collaboration. Instead of following the instructions of a top-down hierarchy working in a competitive environment, which is the norm in most businesses, people who felt passionately about a particular project got together on a voluntary basis to create something that was available for anybody who wishes to use it, as long as they did not turn it into private property. That is, it remains in the commons.

There is now no doubt whatsoever that we are currently heading for calamitous unstoppable run-away climate change. To avoid this outcome, there is also no doubt that the use of fossil fuels must be drastically reduced and fast – within the next few years, well before 2020.

Real life Commonopolis | Forum | ECC 2013 – Communication Platform | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A major hurdle is that „many commoners are not consciously aware that they do commoneering work“. Another hurdle – which some regard as a blessing – is that many commoners „are outside of the digital connect“. The processes of operationalizing and conceptualising the commons need to be supported through new types of interfaces among commoners, semi-structured “commons-labs”, “transition-labs”, experiential sharing andlearning spaces, action research, etc.The point in each instance is to foster personal relationships between commoners with different agendas and to build alliances among different commons constituencies through shared actions (see below, next steps).

What the Sharing Economy Means for Cloud Computing

The sharing movement is in full swing. Innovative “collaborative consumption” companies are helping pool under-utilized assets such homes, boats, cars and then renting them out as services. With the rise of peer-to-peer sharing, it also makes sense that cloud computing—which is compute and storage “resource pooling” and renting—would also gain traction. But just as there are risks in sharing property and other assets, there are also risks in sharing cloud computing infrastructures.

Opening the weather, part 1 | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog

Opening the weather, part 1 | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Weather forecasting as we know it began in earnest in the nineteenth century, when the invention of the electric telegraph revolutionised long-distance communications and made it possible for information about incoming weather to travel faster than the weather itself. Since then weather forecasting has become ever-more accurate, with improvements in the technology of reporting and communicating, as well as in the predictive models, making it possible for us to know the future weather in greater detail than ever before. - See more at: http://blog.okfn.org/2013/06/18/opening-the-weather-part-1/#sthash.fw9d1yjp.Pueq2Abf.dpuf

What the Commons Is Missing | ECC 2013 – Communication Platform | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“After the “Economics and the Commons” conference here in Berlin, I spent a long time digesting the proceedings here in Berlin. Despite near consensus among interested parties on the importance of the “commons” and “commoning,” I had an eerie sensation that something was missing. Despite so much vision casting, I suspect that tangible outcomes would be limited, that something more was needed to bring people together.
