On the importance of recognizing Critical Junctures

On the importance of recognizing Critical Junctures | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“I think that it is important to distinguish between historical epochs or epochal changes (cfr. Epochalism) and what Robert McChesney, the author of Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism is Turning the Internet Against Democracy, calls critical junctures. Critical junctures are periods when institutions are amenable to change in a way that they are not amenable most of the time. Robert McChesney writes that critical junctures occur when there is a disruptive new technology, when established institutions are discredited, and when there is an economic or political crisis. The examples he gives mostly have to do with journalism. Around the turn of the 20th Century, American journalism had, deservedly, a very serious credibility problem. Newspapers had open political allegiances. Journalists were obviously for sale and self-interested in their reporting, and few people considered them credible sources of information. In response to this credibility crisis journalistic institutions voluntarily adopted the standards of conduct that we now consider characteristic of ?professional? journalism, which is to say a commitment to objectivity and the separation of editorial content from reporting.

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: PayPal President on Bitcoin: ‘I don’t think it is a currency’

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: PayPal President on Bitcoin: ‘I don’t think it is a currency’ | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

People are confused. They think because it’s called cryptocurrency [that] it’s a currency. I don’t think it is a currency. It’s a store of value, a distributed ledger. It’s a great place to put assets, especially in places like Argentina with 40 percent inflation, where $1 today is worth 60 cents in a year, and a government’s currency does not hold value. It’s also a good investment vehicle if you have an appetite for risk. But it won’t be a currency until volatility slows down. Whenever the regulatory framework is clearer, and the volatility comes down, then we’ll consider it.

Building Electronics is Getting Easier with the Open Hardware Revolution | Business on GOOD

Building Electronics is Getting Easier with the Open Hardware Revolution | Business on GOOD | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I have been involved in the open hardware revolution since the very beginning. I call it a “revolution” as opposed to a movement, because I believe it will send jolts through technology, design, and innovation, similar to the way 3D printing has rocked all of these fields. The open hardware revolution is not simply about making hardware that is shareable, but also building together, on top of each other's designs. I developed littleBits to create the platform where people could create on top, instead of just making product after product from scratch.

Internet, Social Media and the Workplace - P2P Foundation

Internet, Social Media and the Workplace - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"There have been heated debates on the left over the last few years on the role of the internet and social media through web based communication (WBC). In an article in International Socialism two years ago Jonny Jones reviewed these debates and correctly highlighted the dangers of overestimating the impact of social media on social movements.1 While new information and communication technologies, including social media, have undoubtedly aided the organisational efforts of social movements, they have not created them-and it would be technologically deterministic to put the cart before the horse in assessing their value. Writing from a Marxist perspective against “techno-centrism”, a leading academic on social media, Christian Fuchs, has criticised explanations of rebellions in which social media is perceived as the engine, claiming it to represent a “fetishism of things…a deterministic instrumental ideology that substitutes thinking about society with a focus on technology”.2

Selected Citations on P2P Economics

The crisis we are now living through is essentially a value crisis, where . . . exchange value no longer adequately reflects use value, or, to put it in less cryptic terms, there is a general sensation that a lot of the real values that circulate in our economy cannot be adequately represented. – Adam Arvidsson

HackRF, an open source SDR platform

SDR is the application of Digital Signal Processing to radio waveforms. It is similar to the software-based digital audio techniques that became popular a couple of decades ago. Just as a sound card in a computer digitizes audio waveforms, a software radio peripheral digitizes radio waveforms. It's like a very fast sound card with the speaker and microphone replaced by an antenna. A single software radio platform can be used to implement virtually any wireless technology (Bluetooth, ZigBee, cellular technologies, FM radio, etc.).

Open Value Network - P2P Foundation

Open Value Network - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"An open-value network is a network of open-enterprises that can provide all functions of a corporation in an open-collaboration fashion. Recently, we have seen a rise in open-collaboration in the functions of marketing, communication, value creation, and so forth. Yet, there has never been an open collaboration model that can provide all the functions of a corporation. The structure of open-value network framework provided in this paper outlines a model that could create a true open-collaboration enterprise that would follow the principles of open source.
