Let’s Hear it (also) for the Rootless Cosmopolitans? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Not only from Stalin, who was responsible for popularising the concept bezrodniy kosmopolit (literally: a countryless cosmopolitan, in Stalin’s mind a stateless one also). One could, perhaps, expect a bad press from all worshippers of Blood and Soil.ii After all, the attachment or appeal to these has been a powerful way of bringing or holding people(s) together, and controlling them, during an epoch in which ‘all things solid turn into air’ (Marx and Engels 1848).

What Jeremy Rifkin gets wrong about capitalism, communism, and the Internet of Things

What Jeremy Rifkin gets wrong about capitalism, communism, and the Internet of Things | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I’ve often wondered what Jeremy Rifkin is for and I’m afraid that I still haven’t come up with a satisfactory solution. What he actually does is almost as puzzling: release a book every few years telling us that the entire planet’s about to change in some gloriously unfathomable way, do the book tour then go off to write another one. The last I recall he was telling us that it was going to be the hydrogen economy that ushered in some form of nirvana for us all. The latest campaign appears to be about how the internet of things will do so. That Rifkin thinks this is going to be important makes me bearish on Google’s acquisition of Nest.

Don't Worry, the 'Sharing Economy' Even Confuses CPAs - Next City

Don't Worry, the 'Sharing Economy' Even Confuses CPAs - Next City | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As a general rule, companies at the heart of the "sharing economy" — the term seems to demand a ‘so-called’ in front of it or quotes around it, take your pick — have largely left it to their users to navigate whether and how to pay taxes or what sort of insurance to carry. They have, to borrow a phrase from Facebook, moved fast and broken things, including the knowledge of accountants.

Why America may be the future bastion of virtual currencies - The Hill (blog)

Why America may be the future bastion of virtual currencies - The Hill (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Bitcoin still remains a viable currency. With so many faithful proponents worldwide, Bitcoin has maintained significant value and the options to trade this unsanctioned currency remain robust. While Bitcoin has fallen from its lofty heights of more than a thousand dollars, it did dramatically rise in value from its humble beginnings - a few pennies - to more than six hundred dollars, where it trades today. There are now Bitcoin ATMs, numerous exchanges and retailers to convert Bitcoin, and many bars and restaurants that will gladly accept virtual currency around the world.

How Can Crypto-Money Become a Money of the Commons - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The question becomes: how can crypto-money, once freed by institutional constraints, be able to lead the attack to the heart of oligarchy of financial big intermediaries? In other words, can crypto-money become, as instrument, the money of the common?

A Vision of Post-Clicktivist Activism | Adbusters Culturejammer Headquarters | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Clicktivism is a Trojan horse, a tactical malware, deployed by a dying American empire. What better way to cripple the revolutionary potential of a whole generation than to embed the logic of the marketplace within the very tools that would-be revolutionaries use? Forget infiltrator "Anna" and the plague of agent provocateurs. The cop we need to worry about is residing in the computer code.

Facebook becomes the new front in Mexico's drug war

Facebook becomes the new front in Mexico's drug war | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On December 16th, 2009, Arturo Beltrán Leyva, leader of one of the largest and most violent illegal drug enterprises in Mexico, was killed in a shootout. An ambush, really. Orchestrated by the Mexican federal government and based on intelligence from the US, it took place in a suburb about an hour’s drive south of Mexico City, as part of a coordinated assault on the upscale apartment building where Beltrán Leyva was staying. At least 200 Mexican marines were involved, along with navy helicopters and two army tanks.

Arduino: Open Hardware at 10 - ComputerworldUK (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Something strange is happening in the world of openness: projects are celebrating anniversaries. And not just any anniversary, but ones that remind us that free software and associated open projects have been around for decades now - more than three decades in the case of GNU, and over two decades for Linux. Open hardware is a more recent endeavour, but even that is starting to become venerable. Last Saturday marked thetenth anniversary of perhaps the most important open hardware project of all: Arduino. Here are the basic facts:
