Pay As You Go Sunshine: How Solar Energy and Mobile Phones are Powering the Developing World

Pay As You Go Sunshine: How Solar Energy and Mobile Phones are Powering the Developing World | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Every night, something unusual happens in Samuel Kimani’s home on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Samuel, 48, lives with his wife Mary and their three children. Their family supports itself day-to-day through their main source of income, their cow Baraka, whose milk is collected daily and sold directly to customers for about $1.80 a day. Their township has few amenities and grid electricity is available only to the few who can afford it. But at Samuel’s house, two bright lights shine all through the evening.

Viva Podemos: the left shows it can adapt and thrive in a crisis

Viva Podemos: the left shows it can adapt and thrive in a crisis | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
It’s almost a political cliche. If a country is battered by economic disaster, its ever poorer citizens will turn in droves to the crude xenophobia of the populist right. A lack of secure jobs and affordable homes, plummeting living standards: Johnny Foreigner proves an all-too-convenient scapegoat. This is a script that seems to have been followed to the letter in austerity Britain. Anti-establishment fury has been funnelled into an anti-immigration party led by an ex-City broker who wants to stick it to the man by privatising public services, slashing taxes on the rich, and attacking hard-won British workers’ rights. But, as Spain shows us, it doesn’t have to be this way.

The Web Is Dying; Apps Are Killing It | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Web—that thin veneer of human-readable design on top of the machine babble that constitutes the Internet—is dying. And the way it’s dying has farther-reaching implications than almost anything else in technology today.

Read a similar article recently. Love the quote, "If we can end the elitism and teach more science fiction to teenagers and young adults, we can change the world."  --Very much agree.

On the phenomenon of bullshit jobs - David Graeber

On the phenomenon of bullshit jobs - David Graeber | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the year 1930, John Maynard Keynes predicted that, by century’s end, technology would have advanced sufficiently that countries like Great Britain or the United States would have achieved a 15-hour work week. There’s every reason to believe he was right. In technological terms, we are quite capable of this. And yet it didn’t happen. Instead, technology has been marshaled, if anything, to figure out ways to make us all work more. In order to achieve this, jobs have had to be created that are, effectively, pointless. Huge swathes of people, in Europe and North America in particular, spend their entire working lives performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed. The moral and spiritual damage that comes from this situation is profound. It is a scar across our collective soul. Yet virtually no one talks about it.

Peel-the-Onion - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The article, Solution Development started with the questions: “Have you ever had such a clever idea that you couldn't imagine it would not be a success? Then, for whatever the reason, it just didn't develop as you thought it would - maybe not at all?” The article went on to posit the notion that the interplay between the concept and the context in which it develops is a major determinant in whether an idea evolves to becomes a valuable solution in the eyes of those who take delivery.

Recently, the “I* Group” [1] was invited to participate in the NETmundial Initiative, which is different from the one-time NETmundial meeting in which we participated in April 2014; we endorsed the outcomes of that meeting. This new and different NETmundial Initiative has been organized by the partnership of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and the World Economic Forum (WEF) [2]. This announcement has resulted in considerable discussion and concern amongst various stakeholders regarding the purpose, scope, and nature of the proposed activity or organization.
