The Digital Keys Blog: Digital keys - what the sharing economy needs to go into hyperdrive

The Digital Keys Blog: Digital keys - what the sharing economy needs to go into hyperdrive | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Why pay through the nose for something when you can rent it more cheaply from a stranger online? This is the premise for the 'sharing economy'. Other terms being thrown around for this relatively new phenomenon (well its around 4 years old now) include, "collaborative consumption", the "asset-light lifestyle", the "collaborative economy", "peer economy", or "access economy". What the share economy is missing right now is "affordable and convenient access control" or "digital keys". With digital keys the sharing economy would go into hyper-drive.

40 Gbit Fast Wireless Data Transmission Marks New World Record - Science World Report

40 Gbit Fast Wireless Data Transmission Marks New World Record - Science World Report | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A wireless transmission with 40 Gbit/s over a distance of one kilometer, achieved by researchers of theFraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, Germany, set a new world record and ties in seamlessly with the capacity of optical fiber transmission. In the future, such radio links will be able to close gaps in providing broadband internet by supplementing the network in rural areas and places which are difficult to access.

Reading the attached sign removes some of the mystery; it's a sensor placed there by Google to record the various conditions of the environment, including temperature, humidity, pressure, light, air quality, motion, and noise levels. Five hundred of these things scattered throughout Moscone are feeding over 4,000 data streams back to Google.

It’s worth mentioning that their is no science without theory. The human mind is wired for creating theories. That is why there is a neural network built into our brain/mind system. It is wired to consider the un-manifested.

Commons for Public Health - 2013 - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Idea: Publicly funded research plays the key role in generating solutions to tackle major societal challenges – in health, food, green technologies, culture & arts, and other sectors. Yet within the current innovation and technology transfer paradigm, these inventions often do not reach their full potential to serve the public good. The current model of commercialization tends to entail restricted access to the fruits of public investment, lack of transparency, and monopolies - classical consequences of the enclosure of the (knowledge) commons.

Commons in the Post-Soviet Area - 2013 - P2P Foundation

Commons in the Post-Soviet Area - 2013 - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The actual situation in the countries of the former world of “real socialism” can be described as conflict between traditional Russian culture of Commons (òbtschschina), occupied and transformed by the soviet state into state controlled soviet structures on one side and neoliberal attacks of privatisation and monetarisation by WTO on the other. Since Russia – hesitating for 18 years after perestroika – entered WTO in August of 2012 this conflict is increasing. The question is arising seriously, if Russian (and Eurasian) culture of commons, which remained in spite of privatisation, will be able and willing to overcome this pressure of further privatisation. The Question is: Will there be resistance against the full program of WTO and when, how will it look like? Or different: Who is going to transform whom – WTO Russian (and Eurasian) commons ore commons culture of Russia (and Eurasia) the WTO?

A critical look at the open science commons (part 1) | ECC 2013 – Communication Platform | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This first part is an introduction to a book about Open Source in Genomics, not only the diybio movement but more in general how open science culture and practices interact with today’s innovation and market system. Alessandro Delfanti’s central thesis, see the excerpt on Open Science Politics in part 2 tomorrow, is that “openness” also means: open to new forms of capitalist appropriation.

Shareable: Mesh2013: Socialstructing the Sharing Economy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

· Scale and acceleration. The whole purpose of Mesh was to build a community to scale and accelerate the sharing economy. So, as you’d expect, keynotes focused on this. Steven Johnson talked about themes from his new book, Future Perfect. What stuck with me was what he’s researching now – how "translational medicine" accelerates the diffusion of medical innovations into society. He related that attendees where translational economists working to smuggle the sharing economy into the mainstream. Robin Chase gave a convincing, data-packed presentation that showed the deep trouble we’re in with global warming (even the conservative World Bank is worried) and how open sourcing the solution is the only way to meet the challenge. She quotedBanny Banerjee of Stanford’s d. school: “You can’t solve exponential problems with linear solutions.” She urged people to design solutions that leverage excess capacity, foster participation, and result in cooperative gain.
