Falling Fruit: Mapping Free Food Around the World

Falling Fruit: Mapping Free Food Around the World | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In 2008, while living in Boulder and working toward a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Colorado, I created the original Falling Fruit. Inspired by Urban Edibles, a foraging map for my hometown of Portland, Oregon, I sought to create a similar one for Boulder. I started by expanding a map created by Marco Lam and his students at Naropa University. More than pointing the way to free lunch, I hoped to remind Boulder's denizens that fruits and vegetables don't grow on grocery store shelves, they grow on plants – including those many neighborhood trees from which they fall, unused, to quietly stain our sidewalks.

RelayRides Challenges the Sharing Economy | OneLap - TechCrunch (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sharing economy companies like RelayRides are a lot harder to build than they appear. They’re similar to peer-to-peer product marketplaces, but transactions are based on temporary usage rather than an exchange of physical ownership – which adds significant complexity. Scheduling, insurance, dispute resolution and pricing are some of the elements that need to be considered. For example, what happens if a renter doesn’t bring a car back in time, and the car is supposed to be available for someone else? How do you handle disputes if a car is damaged during a rental?

This study analyzed public opinion data for the 45 societies from the latest World Values Survey and found that Internet use promotes democratic support in democratic countries but not in authoritarian countries. In advanced democracies, democratic ideas and thoughts are freely produced and disseminated in cyberspace, and Internet users tend to absorb them. On the other hand, this online content is highly controlled by authoritarian governments in non-democratic settings, and Internet users are likely to be exposed to pro-government messages and entertainment, thereby nullifying the democratic utility of Internet use. These different social learning processes result in a global reinforcement effect of Internet use on democratic support. The results confirm that the Internet is a neutral technology and its effect depends on the political environment where it is used.

The EU soon intends to sign two far-reaching trade agreements: one with Canada (CETA = Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) and one with the USA (TTIP = Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership). The official line is that this will create jobs and increase economic growth. However, the beneficiaries of these agreements are not in fact citizens, but big corporations:
