The Economics of Star Trek — Editor's Picks — Medium

The Economics of Star Trek — Editor's Picks — Medium | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I’ve been reading a lot about robots lately. When I read about robots, and the future, I can’t help but think about it in economic terms. And that inevitably turns my mind to the branch of economics called post scarcity economics. Traditional economics, of course, deals with the efficient allocation of inherently scarce materials. Post scarcity economics deals with the economics of economies that are no longer constrained by scarcity of materials — food, energy, shelter, etc.

Government Intervention & the growing pains of the Sharing Economy - The Rude Baguette

Government Intervention & the growing pains of the Sharing Economy - The Rude Baguette | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The 2008 financial crisis was arguably the catalyst for what became known as The Sharing Economy. Embodied by marketplace services like Airbnb for lodging, Blablacar for transportation, and even second-hand luxury goods marketplaces like InstantLuxe & Vestiaire Collective, the Sharing Economy cuts out the distributor, the retailer, the rental service – namely, ‘the man’ – and puts those who have supply squarely in front of those who have demand. The “Peer to Peer” economy may feel like a large step backwards into an archaic bartering system, but the reality is that many people, hit with unemployment, slashed or stagnating wages, and other hard times, are realizing that all the things that once seemed necessary to own, are not. The P2P housing rental market size alone is said to be $26 Billion, quoted earlier this year in The Economist.

Banned TED Talk: Rupert Sheldrake – The Science Delusion

Banned TED Talk: Rupert Sheldrake – The Science Delusion | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“How can science be stuck? You are missing the point of science! Science is not a thing it’s a method!” While I totally agree that science is a method, what I am alluding to in this article is that many of the theories we have come to believe that science has produced have been scientifically proven to be incorrect yet we continue to go along with them. The reason this happens is because in many cases we are no longer using the scientific method as it is meant to be used. The stage in the method where we are supposed to go back and a re-develop a hypothesis after evidence proves the the initial theory wrong, we instead get stuck in maintaing our belief because of the money, fear, ego and pride that get in the way.

Some of Anonymous’ actions have been a force for good. Anonymous helped to bring attention to the Steubenville rape case in the United States — where a teenage girl was digitally raped by jocks from her school’s football team — and they helped to provide technological support during the Tunisian revolutions of late 2010-2011.

» The Collapse of Complex Business Models Clay Shirky

I gave a talk last year to a group of TV executives gathered for an annual conference. From the Q&A after, it was clear that for them, the question wasn’t whether the internet was going to alter their business, but about the mode and tempo of that alteration. Against that background, though, they were worried about a much more practical matter: When, they asked, would online video generate enough money to cover their current costs?

Can Employee-Owned Companies Reboot the Economy? - TIME

Can Employee-Owned Companies Reboot the Economy? - TIME | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The American worker is doing so well. The median wage earner’s pay hasn’t grown in years, while most economic growth is being captured only by the already wealthy. While these problems are well-documented, finding a solution for the average wage-earner’s plight has been more difficult.

When You Say T.I.N.A., I say T.A.T.A.: Immanuel Wallerstein on Neo-Liberalism Today

Immanuel Wallerstein discusses what people call "Neoliberalism." It was never an accurate description, and IW explains what it means and how Neoliberalism's political moment is over. It used to be that "T.I.N.A.", or "There Is No Alternative", ruled the day, but now the world situation has changed.

The Evolution of Work - Huffington Post

The Evolution of Work - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Work is clearly evolving which means that we are seeing new technologies and behaviors enter our organizations. These new behaviors and technologies are largely being fueled by the consumer web and now organizations are struggling to adapt. I wanted to create something which visually shows how exactly work is evolving and what areas are being impacted. To help do that my team from Chess Media Group and I put together a visual explaining the evolution of work. A high level explanation for each area is provided below after the graphic. Share it with your friends and colleagues who are seeking to understand how the world of work is changing.

The Narrative Clip is a digital camera about the size of a postage stamp that clips to one’s breast pocket or shirt collar and takes a photo every thirty seconds of whatever one’s seeing. The photos are uploaded to the cloud and can be accessed on demand with a smartphone app, making it easy to look up any moment in one’s life. When the project to mass-produce these cameras first hit Kickstarter, I knew I had to have one, and with any luck mine will be arriving in a couple of weeks.

Property and casualty (p&c) insurers have been quick to adapt technology to meet changing consumer needs. Direct marketing and online portals make it easier for consumers to understand and purchase insurance, while usage-based insurance (UBI) allows safe drivers, particularly those who drive less, to reduce their premiums.

Parking Yields to the Sharing Economy - Urban Land Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Just as rapidly urbanizing U.S. neighborhoods grapple with the challenges of auto-oriented land use patterns from the past, millennials and entrepreneurs have come up with a solution: the sharing economy.  Flexible new transportation services like Uber, Zipcar, and bikeshare programs can reduce parking requirements and free up street-level space for more dynamic urban uses.
