Openness, a necessary revolution into a smarter world | Open Thoughts 2013

Openness, a necessary revolution into a smarter world | Open Thoughts 2013 | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Our current political economy has the weirdest DNA. It considers nature to be a perpetually abundant resource, i.e. it is based on a false notion of material abundance; on the other hand, it believes that intellectual, scientific and technical exchange should be subject to strong proprietary constraints, and subjects innovation to internet restrictions. Thus the paradoxical but also dramatic contradiction of the present system: while it is rapidly overburdening the carrying capacity of the planet, at the same time it inhibits the solutions that humanity might find for it.

The Direct Economy | HomeFree America | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It is something the entire edifice of the old economy can’t even see, so don’t even bother trying to explain it to them. There’s also crossover between the two economies, but sooner than later, the direct economy will dwarf the old (in terms of value to participants and the rate of innovation that occurs).

Event's focus: The sharing economy is here, and it will disrupt your business - Wichita Business Journal (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Much of the sharing economy is built on the Internet, which allows person-to-person exchanges of goods and services to happen not just within communities, but globally. Smith says growth in mobile technology and social media have sped the movement, because they’ve enabled people to be constantly connected to contacts near and far.

Tinkering Fundamentals: Integrating Making Activities into Your STEM Classroom

Tinkering Fundamentals: Integrating Making Activities into Your STEM Classroom | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Tinkering is an age-old human practice that has recently been introduced into the educational field as a potential driver of creativity, excitement, and innovation in science learning. It is seen by many as an effective means to engage students in exploring STEM concepts, practices and phenomena. Tinkering typically blends the high and low tech tools of science along with a strong aesthetic dimension that supports children’s self expression. For over a decade, the Exploratorium has been developing science-rich tinkering activities. Working with learning scientists, we have identified a set of design principles and indicators of learning that can help you to integrate tinkering activities into your elementary and middle school science programs. This course will focus on key design elements of high quality science-rich tinkering activities, facilitation strategies, and environmental organization. Selected classroom tinkering activities will involve electricity and magnetism as well as force and motion.  Using a library of video exemplars, we will review the ways in which tinkering supports students' science learning through providing opportunities for them to deepen engagement, intentionality, innovation, collaboration, and understanding. This course will excite you, inspire you, and get you and your students tinkering in no time.

The New Science of Cities | The MIT Press

The New Science of Cities | The MIT Press | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In The New Science of Cities, Michael Batty suggests that to understand cities we must view them not simply as places in space but as systems of networks and flows. To understand space, he argues, we must understand flows, and to understand flows, we must understand networks—the relations between objects that comprise the system of the city. Drawing on the complexity sciences, social physics, urban economics, transportation theory, regional science, and urban geography, and building on his own previous work, Batty introduces theories and methods that reveal the deep structure of how cities function.

Cook Report: The Right to Telecommunications Self-Determination with Examples from Spain, USA, Argentina and France

This November-December COOK Report explores the free network movement literally across continents and hemispheres – from agrarian villages nestled among the foothills of the Pyrenees to urban inner-city neighborhoods in America’s Heartland. As a follow on to the March April 2013 exploration of guifi.net and Isaac Wilder’s Kansas City work, it looks at these networks as part of a global movement – one where the builders are collaborating on a national and international level. These builders work together and share their tools and code. Nothing proprietary here. They don’t seek wealth. They do seek to do for the communities in which they live what, “free market” based capitalism has failed to do. They are a bright hope for a future that, if one is not a part of the ruling elite, looks increasingly dim.

10 commercially successful open source hardware projects in 2013 | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Open-source hardware (OSHW) is part of an emerging business model where all the design files of a product, including the circuit schematics, source code and physical design, are made publicly available under a license so that others can improve upon the design and share the improvements with the community. It works in a similar way to open-source software, where there are already established business models that allow for profitable companies. Here are 10 of the most successful open source hardware projects in 2013:
