Testimony of Equality - P2P Foundation

Testimony of Equality - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"A testimony of equality is an act, usage, or course of conduct by a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) tending to assert or promote equality of persons, arising from the Friends' belief that all people are equal in the eyes of God. The word testimony describes the way that Friends testify or bear witness to their beliefs in their everyday life. A testimony is therefore not a belief, but is committed action arising out of Friends' religious experience. Testimony of equality has included Quakers' participating in actions that promote the equality of the sexes and races, as well as other classifications of people." Jeremy Scahill: Leaked U.S. Terrorist Watchlist Rulebook Reveals "Global Stop and Frisk Program"

Jeremy Scahill: Leaked U.S. Terrorist Watchlist Rulebook Reveals "Global Stop and Frisk Program" | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The Obama administration has expanded the national terrorist watchlist system by approving broad guidelines over who can be targeted. A leaked copy of the secret government guidebook reveals that to be deemed a "terrorist" target, "irrefutable evidence or concrete facts are not necessary." Both "known" and "suspected" suspects are tracked, and terrorism is so broadly defined that it includes people accused of damaging property belonging to the government or financial institutions. Other factors that can justify inclusion on the watchlist include postings on social media or having a relative already deemed a terrorist. We are joined by investigative reporters Jeremy Scahill and Ryan Devereaux of The Intercept. Last week they published the secret U.S. document along with their new article, "The Secret Government Rulebook for Labeling You a Terrorist."

Losers Create Things Too | Article | CCCB LAB | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For some time now, the CCCB LAB team has been collaboratively compiling a music playlist that can be approached as a soundtrack to the different stages of the creative process: the Eureka moment of a new idea, the development of a project, doubts, the desired or unexpected solution, error, low points, perseverance, starting all over again, getting things right, the joy of teamwork… The following post is a one of the many ways in which music can be a stimulus for personal or collaborative reflection on the act of creation, its paradoxes and its rarer offshoots.

Introducing Stellar | Stellar | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Stellar is a decentralized protocol for sending and receiving money in any pair of currencies. This means users can, for example, send a transaction from their Yen balance and have it arrive in Euros, Yen, or even bitcoin. We’re expecting to support the usual categories of transactions: payments to a merchant, remittances back home, or rent splits with a roommate.

ResPublica | Think Tank | Phillip Blond | Big Society | Government policy | It’s The ‘Common Good’ Economy, Stupid | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the wake of economic and financial meltdown politicians from all parties have been eager to offer new models of capitalism ranging from the ‘responsible’ to the ‘popular’.  As has been recently noted in the media, Catholic Social Teaching (CST) has a lot to contribute to the debate about the nature of capitalism, values and the market place.  Informed by our experiences of working with local partners and communities in the Global South, a reflection on CST principles as well as our own analysis of the current economic debate we are in the process of developing three concepts - purpose, participation and political communities - that we think need to be at the heart of any new approach to capitalism and the economy.

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins

The amazing world of alternative currencies: a list of 8 “different” coins | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Since we’ve created money, we also have invented ways of replacing it with other forms of currency, whether it’s because we don’t fully trust fiat currency or because we love the idea of having choices. Bitcoin is the perfect mix of these two valid explanations and, like our favourite virtual coin, a lot of alternative currencies have lives, prospered and (sometimes) ended after providing a lifetime of joy to their users. Let’s take a look at some of these “different” currencies.

“My sense is that the commons movement could benefit from deeper engagement with the corporate community, including activists who advocate for corporations to take full accountability for their impacts on capitals that are vital to stakeholder well-being. Exploring 3-D printing to make organs for transplants - EurekAlert (press release) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Printing whole new organs for transplants sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but the real-life budding technology could one day make actual kidneys, livers, hearts and other organs for patients who desperately need them. In the ACS journal Langmuir, scientists are reporting new understanding about the dynamics of 3-D bioprinting that takes them a step closer to realizing their goal of making working tissues and organs on-demand.

The Evidence Is In: Patent Trolls Do Hurt Innovation

The Evidence Is In: Patent Trolls Do Hurt Innovation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Over the last two years, much has been written about patent trolls, firms that make their money asserting patents against other companies, but do not make a useful product of their own. Both the White House and Congressional leaders have called for patent reform to fix the underlying problems that give rise to patent troll lawsuits. Not so fast, say Stephen Haber and Ross Levine in a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed (“The Myth of the Wicked Patent Troll”). We shouldn’t reform the patent system, they say, because there is no evidence that trolls are hindering innovation; these calls are being driven just by a few large companies who don’t want to pay inventors.
