“Grown out of the 15-M or Indignados movement, they have managed to halt 692 evictions up until now. When they and 15-M jointly call for street protest such as the “white sea” or the “sea of citizens”, hundreds of thousands have responded in cities all over Spain, repeatedly.

The emergence of social coops for social care: Italy and beyond

The emergence of social coops for social care: Italy and beyond | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The rise of social enterprise as a new, hybrid form of social care has been met with growing interest. In the co-operative sector, the emergence of social co-ops has been the most significant change to occur in the movement in thirty years. These are co-operatives whose purpose is the provision of Social Care, not only to their own members but also to the community as a whole.

Report: Governance Structures for Social Movements

Report: Governance Structures for Social Movements | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Social movements throughout history have achieved lasting success by altering institutional structures and cultural norms to reflect their core values and beliefs. Their achievements can be seen in

(1) the emergence of new social practices like interracial marriage or the honoring of indigenous traditions;

(2) adoption and enforcement of policy frameworks like the Bill of Rights or the Endangered Species Act; and — in some circumstances —

(3) as novel organizational forms that alter the institutional landscape like the new hybrid for-profit/non-profit legal charter for the benefit corporation or the crowdsourced archive of information known as Wikipedia.

In this strategy brief, we will consider the organizational frames that bolster (and restrict) how an organization can be deployed to achieve goals for a social movement. An organizational frame is the structured web of rules, relationships, and values that comprise an idealized cognitive model for understanding and acting within a particular institutional context.”

The fate of the internet after Snowden: Balkanisation is a fact

The fate of the internet after Snowden: Balkanisation is a fact | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Repeat after me: Edward Snowden is not the story. The story is what he has revealed about the hidden wiring of our networked world. This insight seems to have escaped most of the world’s mainstream media, for reasons that escape me but would not have surprised Evelyn Waugh, whose contempt for journalists was one of his few endearing characteristics. The obvious explanations are: incorrigible ignorance; the imperative to personalise stories; or gullibility in swallowing US government spin, which brands Snowden as a spy rather than a whistleblower.

Whistleblowing Is the New Civil Disobedience

Whistleblowing Is the New Civil Disobedience | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Like many other civil liberties advocates, I’ve been annoyed by how the media has spilled more ink talking about Edward Snowden than the issues that he’s trying to raise. I’ve grumbled at the “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” reality show and the way in which TV news glosses over the complexities that investigative journalists have tried to publish as the story unfolded. But then a friend of mine – computer scientist Nadia Heninger – flipped my thinking upside down with a simple argument: Snowden is offering the public a template for how to whistleblow; leaking information is going to be the civil disobedience of our age.

Underminers | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Industrial Civilization is likely to be the last great empire humanity will ever see. If it is allowed to continue in its ravenous way then there is no future for humanity, for the natural systems and processes that allow humans to exist on Earth are the very things that Industrial Civilization is destroying. In fact, no form of civilization has ever been sustainable nor ever will be. In order for humanity to continue on Earth then civilization has to stop, and people allowed to return to a way of living that is connected to the real world.

The Promise of Localism and Peter Drucker's Post-Capitalist Society

The Promise of Localism and Peter Drucker's Post-Capitalist Society | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Peter Drucker, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 96, was one of the wise persons of the twentieth century and certainly its most influential organizational consultant. In a book published in 1993, called Post-Capitalist Society, he argued that every few hundred years societies go through difficult transitional periods resulting in a new society with new values, new beliefs, and new political and economic practices. He believed the world was going through just such a sharp transformation that would end about 2020 with a rearranged global society. The driving force of this transformation was the knowledge worker, and the new society that would emerge around 2020, he called the Post-Capitalist Society.

I’m sitting in a cafe in downtown Oakland, just up the block from a HUB coworking space and a stone’s throw from a BART station. The wooden tables are full and sharing them is the norm. Against the wall, people are sitting at repurposed school desks and behind the counter is a barista with a hat that says “Oakganic.”

A Network Society | bparsons01

A way to look at a network society is by first understanding that a network knows no boundaries and can therefore be looked at as a form of globalisation. The idea of something having no boundaries is quite fascinating due to the fact that society has rules and regulations that are meant to be followed; but when you add the aspect of globalisation to the mix as well, it all just seems pretty amazing. The fact that something we can’t see or may not even know about or know we are a part of, is able to bring people from all over the world together can be a little mind-blowing.

MARTIN LEE's curator insight, September 26, 2013 12:50 AM

This is a good article in demonstrating how people need to act on ideas when they think of them. The author talks about missed opportunities but also has some good outcomes of capitalizing on those good ideas. The one that stands out is writing to the President of another country in regards to a diplomatic relationship because there was no embassy. To his suprise, the President finally received the letter and the President met with government officials from the other country to arrange talks. A powerful creative idea can change a lot if you grab people's attention by engaging them.

Kier Segui's comment, September 26, 2013 2:31 AM
The article you chose is provides good ideas of what to do when you come up with a great idea. I believe ideas are very powerful and they can make or break a person. In saying this ideas are what have shaped the world around us. The article you have chosen suggests that whenever you get a great idea you should share it, in this certain situation, through email. The article also gives examples of certain peoples experiences when sharing their ideas through email and the idea of sharing these experiences will motivate others to do the same. I also like the last statement you made about how a powerful idea can change a lot if you engage people's attention. I believe engaging people with your ideas is what will make someone successful.
Calvin Romeo's comment, September 26, 2013 3:19 AM
Very interesting article here with a great example off how acting on a great idea and a bit off faith led into a significant step that could possibly influence many peoples lives and in turn also have the potential to also improve/strengthen relationships between both these parties. We hear on numerous occasions during life weather it be professional or personal always share your good ideas as you never know the amount of impact it could have not only on other lives but also on yours. Great article to encourage people to take that extra step!!
