The App Generation: How Today’s Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World, by Howard Gardner and Katie Davis

The App Generation: How Today’s Youth Navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World, by Howard Gardner and Katie Davis | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Any book featuring the phrase “today’s youth” in the subtitle immediately has me on edge. It conjures up a generation gap, “tune in, turn on, drop out” and brown acid. Updating this story, we enter a world of Miley Cyrus’ piercings, twerking and tongue aerobics.

Priscilla Beck's curator insight, February 10, 3:33 PM

This author gives an overview with her insight about the new book by Howard Gardner and Katie Davis. The main focus of the book is to discover how Apps are impacting Indentity, Intimacy and imagination. Apps are easily accessible, simple and require little expertise to manage. How are they affecting the ethical compass of today's youth? This book apparently answers these questions.

MOOCs: High-tech hype, or the future of education? - Sacramento News & Review | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The room is dark and silent. Inside, a young computer scientist with a shaved head and intense blue eyes sits alone at a desk facing a pane of sound-absorbent foam. Above him a video camera points straight down at a high-tech tablet; his right hand is poised to scribble out code on its screen. Taped to the camera’s microphone is a yellow Post-it with one word scrawled on it—“ENERGY”—a curious message to the professor in his own handwriting.

The FLOK Society Vision of a Post-Capitalist Economy | David Bollier | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Michel Bawuens, Founder of the P2P Foundation, has recorded four short videos describing the FLOK Society’s pioneering research project in Ecuador.  FLOK stands for “Free, Libre, Open Knowledge,” and the FLOK Society is a government-sponsored project to imagine how Ecuador might make a strategic transition to a workable post-capitalist knowledge economy. As Research Director of the project, Michel and his team are exploring the practical challenges of making commons-based peer production a widespread, feasible reality as a matter of national policy and law.

Mlik Sahib's curator insight, March 5, 2014 7:25 PM

"The alternative that we should be building, he urged, is “a civic P2P economy where the value returns to the value creators.”  We need to develop new sorts of ethical market entities that can produce “cooperative accumulation” instead of “capital accumulation.”"

Michel Bauwens: FLOK Society Project - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"FLOK Society is, at its core, a research project occurring within a university: Ecuador’s post-graduate-focused state school the IAEN. But the parameters of the project push us to seek as many partnerships with any other schools, entities, social organizations, and communities with a stake in the project. Which is to say, there is an open invitation, and there soon will be proactive attempts to court, input and collaboration from all Ecuadorians and any international group that shares the values of FLOK and is interested in the theory that by creating and empowering peer networks a country can create a new economic matrix.

How the Internet Is Narrowing Our Minds - Hazlitt Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The middle class is shrinking. As the Internet has wildly expanded our options, it has, paradoxically, shrunk our horizons: as thinkers like Astra Taylor, author of The People’s Platform, warn, a generic set of crowd-pleasing blockbusters dominates more than ever.

Initially focused on radiation levels in Japan, Safecast is now trying to get a radiation baseline for the planet as well as measure other environmental factors such as air quality. All Safecast data is published, free of charge, under a CC0 designation. Safecast is apolitical, and takes no stance for or against nuclear power. Safecast is pro-data and committed to giving people accurate information with which they can draw their own conclusions. Safecast is funded by several grants and charitable foundations, however financial contributors and donors have no input on Safecast method or mission”.

✌ LIBRARIES OF THE PEER PRODUCTION ERA / PETER TROXLER | Open Design Now

In today’s society, individuals often collaborate in producing cultural content, knowledge, and other information, as well as physical goods. In some cases, these individuals share the results and products, the means, methods and experience gained from this collaboration as a resource for further development; CO-CREATION this phenomenon is referred to as commons-based peer production.

The social contract behind the Internet is broken and there is a conspiracy of ... - ComputerWeekly.com (blog)

The long overdue debate on policy towards the all-pervasive surveillance of our on-line activities is finally under way. On Monday morning the Shadow Home Secretary moved on from the "trust us" policy of the last Government with regard to state surveillance. On Monday evening a Conservative Technology Forum round table identified a clear way forward with regard to improving the governance of the surveillance done by the state and law enforcement but not with regard to the more frightening situation regarding the private sector and consumer devices. It  heard that the terms and conditions of widely sold smart (i.e. Internet enabled) TVs include permission for data on your viewing habits to be transmitted to anywhere in the world. It was told of the break up of a couple after a friend warned them of the default tracking settings on their iPhones (they took a look and it became apparent that one of them was spending rather a lot of time at a particular location when they said they were ....).

Stigmergic epistemology, stigmergic cognition

To know is to cognize, to cognize is to be a culturally bounded, rationality-bounded and environmentally located agent. Knowledge and cognition are thus dual aspects of human sociality. If social epistemology has the formation, acquisition, mediation, transmission and dissemination of knowledge in complex communities of knowers as its subject matter, then its third party character is essentially stigmergic. In its most generic formulation, stigmergy is the phenomenon of indirect communication mediated by modifications of the environment. Extending this notion one might conceive of social stigmergy as the extra-cranial analog of an artificial neural network providing epistemic structure. This paper recommends a stigmergic framework for social epistemology to account for the supposed tension between individual action, wants and beliefs and the social corpora. We also propose that the so-called “extended mind” thesis offers the requisite stigmergic cognitive analog to stigmergic knowledge. Stigmergy as a theory of interaction within complex systems theory is illustrated through an example that runs on a particle swarm optimization algorithm.

Google and the World Brain

Google and the World Brain | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In 2002, quietly and behind closed doors, the Internet giant Google began to scan millions of books in an effort to create a privatised giant global library, containing every book in existence. Not only this, but they claimed they had an even greater purpose--to create a higher form of intelligence, something that HG Wells had predicted in his 1937 essay "World Brain". Working with the world’s most prestigious libraries, Google was said to be reinventing the limits of copyright in the name of free access to anyone, anywhere. But what can possibly be wrong with this picture? As Google and the World Brain reveals, a whole lot...

Bitcoin has theory and history on its side | DetlevSchlichter.com

Bitcoin has theory and history on its side | DetlevSchlichter.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Bitcoin phenomenon has now reached the mainstream media where it met with a reception that ranged from sceptical to outright hostile. The recent volatility in the price of bitcoins and the issues surrounding Bitcoin-exchange Mt. Gox have led to additional negative publicity. In my view, Bitcoin as a monetary concept is potentially a work of genius, and even if Bitcoin were to fail in its present incarnation – a scenario that I cannot exclude but that I consider exceedingly unlikely – the concept itself is too powerful to be ignored or even suppressed in the long run. While scepticism towards anything so fundamentally new is maybe understandable, most of the tirades against Bitcoin as a form of money are ill-conceived, terribly confused, and frequently factually wrong. Central bankers of the world, be afraid, be very afraid!
