Blockupy International Invites Movements, Networks, Organisations to an Open Assembly in Brussels. September 26-27 – Blockupy

Blockupy International Invites Movements, Networks, Organisations to an Open Assembly in Brussels. September 26-27 – Blockupy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We, as Blockupy international coordinating group, met in Berlin on June 21st, to discuss the outcomes of the May of Solidarity and the future perspectives. During the days of mobilization actions were various and rich, and we valued positively that many have been organized from outside the May of Solidarity process. We also agreed that, though the Blockupy process is focused on mobilizing towards the opening of the new ECB building in Frankfurt (now scheduled for early 2015), an autonomous political initiative cannot be simply bounded to the dates established by the institutional agenda: we need a larger social and political perspective. The postponing of Turin EU summit on “youth employment”, on the other hand, has left many without a common space to gather, act and discuss. The message of May of Solidarity across Europe – “Solidarity beyond borders, building democracy from below!” – found much resonance, but a strong transnational movement is still to come and we know that no one, beginning with us, could consider themselves to be sufficient.

Uber's Ratings Terrorize Drivers And Trick Riders. Why Not Fix Them?

Uber's Ratings Terrorize Drivers And Trick Riders. Why Not Fix Them? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

A few days ago, I had a novel Uber experience: I took a ride in a car as grimy and musty-smelling as a typical yellow cab. The driver was friendly and knew his way around, but he was clearly falling short of Uber’s standard that the sedans in its UberX fleet be in “excellent condition.” Since customer feedback is “important to insuring a high-quality experience,” according to the company, when it came time to rate my trip, I only gave the driver three out of five stars.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Nathan Lewis: The Eco-Technic Civilization | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The notion of an “eco-technic civilization” is popular these days. It is a good alternative to the “retro-eco” idea which is everywhere today — that to be in harmony with the earth, one should live in some sort of 19th century pioneer subsistence-farmer fashion. Actually, people in the 19th century were not particularly environmentally aware at all. They scoured the oceans for whales so they could light oil lamps, and deforested much of the North American continent before coal became cheaper than wood. Isn’t a solar-powered LED light better than that? Wouldn’t you rather cook on a modern gas stove (could be from renewable sources, including wood gas, or ethanol) rather than on a primitive wood stove? Team retro-eco then goes farther back in their wayback machine, to perhaps the preindustrial 18th century, or Native American primitivism. One problem with this is that it won’t support large populations. The estimated population of the world in 1750 was 791 million people, about 11% of today’s number.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Cryptocurrencies: Poison or Panacea? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I thought it would be interesting to compare two contrasting articles I have read about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and their predicted impacts on ‘business as usual’. I think it is fairly uncontroversial to speculate that cryptocurrencies are going to be disruptive to existing banking and monetary systems, even to a layman trying to get an overview of the subject like myself. I am starting to discern, however, two trends in the things I am reading on the subject.

Alan Liu » “Theses on the Epistemology of the Digital: Advice For the Cambridge Centre for Digital Knowledge” | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The following was written as a solicited follow-up to my participation in the second planning consultation session of the Cambridge University Centre for Digital Knowledge. The session, held on 7 May 2014 at the Cambridge Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), focused on “digital epistemology,” one of the two intended thematic strands of the Centre for Digital Knowledge. A previous planning consultation at CRASSH that I did not attend focused on the other intended strand of “digital society.”

Chinese Search Giant Baidu Gets Ready to Battle Google - MIT Technology Review

Chinese Search Giant Baidu Gets Ready to Battle Google - MIT Technology Review | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Punk bands from Blondie to the Ramones once played in Broadway Studios, an age-worn 95-year-old neoclassical building surrounded by strip clubs in San Francisco’s North Beach. But early on this bright June morning, a different sort of rock star arrives. A small crowd attending a tech startup conference swarms around a tall, soft-spoken man in a blue dress shirt and navy suit who politely poses for photos. Andrew Ng, newly appointed chief scientist at Baidu, China’s dominant search company, is here to talk about his plans to advance deep learning, a powerful new approach to artificial intelligence loosely modeled on the way the brain works. It has already made computers vastly better at recognizing speech, translating languages, and identifying images—and Ng’s work at Google and Stanford University, where he was a professor of computer science, is behind some of the biggest breakthroughs. After his talk, the audience of about 200 entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and tech workers sends him off with two rounds of applause.
