Essay of the Day: Commons-Based Peer Production in the Perezian Framework

Essay of the Day: Commons-Based Peer Production in the Perezian Framework | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Following the theory of techno-economic paradigm shifts (TEPS), this paper calls attention to the phenomenon of Commons-based peer production (CBPP). In the context of the current paradigm, it argues that civil society can play an important role in creating favourable conditions for a more sustainable global knowledge society. Approaching tentatively the ways in which 3D printing and other desktop manufacturing technologies can be used in CBPP, it also explores the ways in which the partnership with the state may provide a supportive innovative institutional basis for taking the maximum advantage of the emerging synergies in the vein of TEPS theory.”

Stigmergy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stigmergy is a mechanism of indirect coordination between agents or actions.[1] The principle is that the trace left in the environment by an action stimulates the performance of a next action, by the same or a different agent. In that way, subsequent actions tend to reinforce and build on each other, leading to the spontaneous emergence of coherent, apparently systematic activity.

Stigmergy is a form of self-organization. It produces complex, seemingly intelligent structures, without need for any planning, control, or even direct communication between the agents. As such it supports efficient collaboration between extremely simple agents, who lack any memory, intelligence or even individual awareness of each other.[1]

The term "stigmergy" was introduced by French biologist Pierre-Paul Grassé in 1959 to refer to termite behavior. He defined it as: "Stimulation of workers by the performance they have achieved." It is derived from the Greek words στίγμα stigma "mark, sign" and ἔργον ergon "work, action", and captures the notion that an agent’s actions leave signs in the environment, signs that it and other agents sense and that determine and incite their subsequent actions.[2]

If the school is leaving a trace of education that you all can pick up and follow, perhaps it would be stigmergic http://t.co/XD0oiW1P3N

How the Bradley Manning Verdict Avoided a Serious Chill on Whistleblowing - National Journal | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On Tuesday, Judge Col. Denise Lind convicted Army Pfc. Bradley Manning of many major charges, but Manning dodged the big one: "aiding the enemy." That charge would have come with a possible life sentence. The conviction still includes six charges under the Espionage Act, although that had previously been reported as five. Manning could face a long sentence of up to 130 years. Manning had previously pleaded guilty to 10 of the lesser 22 charges against him, pleading not guilty to the most serious, aiding the enemy charge. In total, Manning was convicted of 17 of the 22 counts against him, and of four other counts in a modified form. Sentencing in the case will begin Wednesday morning.

Open source software offers the promise of a revolutionary transformation in defense, intelligence, law enforcement, and government technology at a cost and pace that satisfies the competing requirements of shrinking resources and constantly accelerating global operations. How Successful Cooperative Economic Models Can Work Wonderfully… Somewhere Else

How Successful Cooperative Economic Models Can Work Wonderfully… Somewhere Else | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Capitalism rests on a foundation of myths. One of them is that capitalism somehow “invented” entrepreneurship. Another is that capitalism provides the only “market” economy. Then there is the self-proclaimed virtue of capitalism that only capitalism is compatible with “self-reliance” and individual responsibility. (The reality of course is that most people are utterly dependent on capitalists for jobs,  financing, education,  transportation, health care, shelter and just about everything else.) Capitalism also presents itself as the model of “efficiency,” when in truth it generates enormous waste of all kinds.

Social Media Has Given a Voice to Everybody. We're Screwed. - SF Weekly (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sometimes, the hive mind is wiser, or at least more powerful and efficient, than the individual mind, as when it stood up to and (with the help of well-financed technology companies) defeated the boneheaded proposed anti-piracy laws SOPA and PIPA. But other times, the hive mind wants to gang up on a woman and threaten to rape her because she successfully campaigned to get Jane Austen's image put on England's 10-pound note.
