▶ Quantum Computing - YouTube

For the past decade, a global race has been running to build a mythical machine, the holy grail of calculations ... a quantum computer. Earlier this year Google announced they'd bought one -- the D-Wave Two. Does this mean the race is over? Well ... not quite. The D-Wave Two, though costing Google around a cool $10 million, is currently only good for a certain class of problem. Here in Australia, teams at the University of New South Wales are working on a version that will have a much broader application ... a so-called universal quantum computer. Graham Phillips dons full clean room regalia to check out this cutting edge research.

Declaration: An Internet for the Common Good

“Effective use of the Internet holds the potential to benefit everyone. Currently, however, its benefits are distributed unequally — some people gain power, wealth and influence from using the Internet while others struggle for basic access. Our vision is a technical, interactive and information rich Internet platform on which people in their communities and elsewhere – the poor and marginalized in Developing and Developed countries, women and youth, indigenous peoples, older persons, those with disabilities–are able to develop and exercise their civic intelligence and to work together equitably and effectively to address our multiple individual and collective challenges.

*On the other hand, given the historical behavior of Italian city-states, man, I have to wonder. All I need is some Milanese Sforzas with catapults at the gates of Torino. It took the ultra-wealthy some real effort to completely subvert and own governments, but in Medici Florence that was what it was about from the get-go. Hello, Mayor Bloomberg! Thanks for the public-art!

The Zeitgeist Tracked Down Bill de Blasio | The Nation

The Zeitgeist Tracked Down Bill de Blasio | The Nation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It’s far too soon, of course, to begin drawing comparisons between de Blasio’s election and the epochal achievements of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery campaign. But King’s larger notion—that historical forces converged to create an opening through which the modern civil rights movement would erupt—is instructive in evaluating the meaning of what many progressive New Yorkers are now labeling “the de Blasio moment.” Now as then, the hot winds of the zeitgeist conspired to shape both the figures and events rattling the cage of the status quo.

What will it take?

What will it take? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

What will it take to get us to a would of peace where we all have access to what we need to live a dignified life? My thought is that we will need to share and cooperate as never before, to devote ourselves to promoting the common good, and to create new social, political, and economic structures that better serve those ends.
