Privacy and Harm in a Networked Society · Data & Society

Privacy and Harm in a Networked Society · Data & Society | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Privacy is not something that one has, but something that one seeks to achieve. It requires constant negotiation as information flows and contexts shift. Privacy is particularly complicated in a networked era because of the ease with which people can share information, the increased availability of persistent data, and the ongoing ways in which contexts collapse. To achieve privacy in a networked world, people must actively try to manage the various social situations in which information is accessed, consumed, interpreted, and shared. They cannot simply focus on restricting the flow of information; they must also account for the ways in which information is inferred and used.

The potential of mass collaboration to produce social innovation

The potential of mass collaboration to produce social innovation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Can Collective Intelligence be used to produce social innovation? The advance of information andcommunication technologies in the 21st  century seems to have unlocked the potential of collective intelligence, enabling us to mobilize large crowds to solve problems and produce novelty. However, despite early optimism, more recent scholarship suggests that collective intelligence has serious limits and in particular that it is not suitable for dealing with the types of complex problems that social innovators inevitably face. In order to evaluate more carefully the potential of collective intelligence to support social innovation I present a framework for looking at social innovation processes as a number of distinct phases and mechanisms. I then look at three examples of different types of online platforms used to mobilize collective intelligence. My analysis suggests that each of these has some capacity to support some elements of a social innovation process, but that as the theoretical literature would suggest none of them are useful throughout the process. However, since each of these different platforms has different strengths and weaknesses, by linking them together and utilizing the right platform at the right time, we may be able to harness collective intelligence to greatly enhance social innovation capacity.

The Open Networking Challenge

The Open Networking Challenge | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
One would have to have been living under a rock to not have seen the “ice bucket challenge”. A few months back, people were dumping cold water on their heads in the name of charity. However, just as quickly as that fad showed up, it was gone, as all fads go. The “open networking” movement is getting a lot of attention as well, but in this case, I don’t think it’s a fad, and will have a significant impact on how businesses operate in the future. While the buckets of cold water have disappeared, the need for a revolution in networking continues and businesses are starting to hold their incumbent providers like Cisco Systems CSCO +1.2%, Juniper Networks JNPR +2.1% Alcatel-Lucent , Hewlett-Packard HPQ +0.67% and Brocade Communications Systems BRCD +0.54% more accountable to their networking needs, or face an icy outcome as businesses could shift their purchasing elsewhere.  User groups like ONUG (Open Networking User Group) are taking a leadership role in transforming the networking industry to a more open approach, and I’d like to share my thoughts on it. Let me provide some background first.
