Stanford neurosurgeon launches new open-source medical journal built on a crowdsourcing model

Stanford neurosurgeon launches new open-source medical journal built on a crowdsourcing model | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Stanford neurosurgeon John Adler, MD, has launched a new open-source medical journal that leverages crowdsourcing to make scientific research more readily available to the general public. “The average Joe has little to no access to the medical literature today,” he said in a San Francisco Chronicle story published yesterday. “It’s not right. It should be a human right.”

#GlobalP2P, The Wind that Shook the Net

#GlobalP2P, The Wind that Shook the Net | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Collaboration, networking, transversality, openness, free licenses, remixing, transnationality. On March 20, the hashtag #GlobalP2P suddenly vaulted up among Twitter’s most globally used. One detail: it had never before been a TT(Trending Topic) in any country. Afterwards, it took place as the most watched among many. #GlobalP2P was a choral cry. #GlobalP2P was an insistent echo raising the visibility of the P2P Foundation ‘s Wikisprint event (a mapping of experiences happening around the commons and peer-to-peer) taking place that day in Latin America and Southern Europe. The explosion of #GlobalP2P as a global trend was no accident. There was strategy behind it. The hashtag #P2PWikisprint had had a few weeks to gear up. It came about in a decentralized way, hence its big leap to the global TT. Above all, there was a very intensive process already in place, common among hundreds of groups, networks, activists, foundations, thinkers, universities … and even some governments, both local and supranational.

Current status of peer to peer microgrid implementation

Current status of peer to peer microgrid implementation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“According to Shahidehpour, what makes the new generation of microgrid applications worth paying attention to is that that the elements of a modern microgrid have themselves gotten smart, to the point where they can easily shift loads based on different needs and desired outcomes. “The customer decides when he wants to use power, how much he wants to use.” In this way, a smart microgrid “empowers smart users.”

Matthew Slater on current activism strategies

Matthew Slater on current activism strategies | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Traditional historical narratives imply that change comes from the top down, as a result of the actions of about Kings and presidents. But focusing on the characters and personal circumstances of such leaders simplifies the larger forces always at work. We all know that Henry VIII needed a divorce when he founded the Church of England, but at the time time all northern Europe was stepping out from under the wing of the Pope, achieving a measure of independence and of course taking ownership of all the church’s assets. And when that decision was taken at that high level, were all the protestant agitators and martyrs vindicated? Or if the decision was taken in the King’s bed, perhaps their efforts were irrelevant?

We are on the brink of an implosion of scale!

We are on the brink of an implosion of scale! | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Though the public hasn’t groked it yet, WalMart and its kindred malignant organisms have entered their own yeast-overgrowth death spiral. In a now permanently contracting economy the big box model fails spectacularly. Every element of economic reality is now poised to squash them. Diesel fuel prices are heading well north of $4 again. If they push toward $5 this year you can say goodbye to the “warehouse on wheels” distribution method. (The truckers, who are mostly independent contractors, can say hello to the re-po men come to take possession of their mortgaged rigs.) Global currency wars (competitive devaluations) are about to destroy trade relationships. Say goodbye to the 12,000 mile supply chain from Guangzhou to Hackensack. Say goodbye to the growth financing model in which it becomes necessary to open dozens of new stores every year to keep the credit revolving.

We need to balance our “masculine” global economy with “feminine” global governance.

We need to balance our “masculine” global economy with “feminine” global governance. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“The feminist movement of recent decades has certainly brought major changes for women; more equality in the workplace, more sexual freedom and control, and a more equal social standing alongside men. But one can’t help noticing that women who achieve high positions of power, whether in business or politics, often seem to end up behaving much as men do. That is, they tend to adopt a masculine, power-oriented, competitive, logic-based approach which seems to leave little space for feminine intuition, compassion and feeling. This brings into question whether much has changed at all. For if women’s liberation has resulted in women arriving in business and politics only to behave in much the same competitive fashion as men, we can hardly claim to be on the cusp of a new paradigm!

No Child Left Untableted - New York Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sally Hurd Smith, a veteran teacher, held up her brand-new tablet computer and shook it as she said, “I don’t want this thing to take over my classroom.” It was late June, a month before the first day of school. In a sixth-grade classroom in Greensboro, N.C., a dozen middle-school social-studies teachers were getting their second of three days of training on tablets that had been presented to them as a transformative educational tool. Every student and teacher in 18 of Guilford County’s 24 middle schools would receive one, 15,450 in all, to be used for class work, homework, educational games — just about everything, eventually.
