Most internet of things devices vulnerable to hacking, study finds - Sydney Morning Herald | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Nearly three-quarters of all internet of things devices are susceptible to getting hacked or compromised, according to a recent study.

The study, released by Hewlett-Packard (HP), examined 10 common smart devices, including thermostats, smart TVs and webcams. Each device had approximately 25 vulnerabilities, the study claimed.

As the United States government prepares to implement the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act of 2014 (DATA Act), perhaps it can learn from other countries that already use open data standards for government reporting. That was the hope as representatives from several foreign governments described their open-data projects at a panel held in Washington, D.C., last week by the Data Transparency Coalition, a group lobbying for open data.

‘Sharing economy’ is here | Lane should follow Portland on short-term rental | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, Portland celebrated an economic development coup when Airbnb said it would bring its operational headquarters for North America to the city. The San Francisco-based company’s 160 employees, however, were to be engaged in a business that was not strictly legal in Portland: arranging untaxed short-term rentals in private homes. Last week the city caught up with this emerging sector of the lodging industry and adopted rules to protect guests, neighborhoods and fairness in competition. Lane County should prepare to do the same.

According to a new report called "Out Online: The Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth on the Internet," by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network released last month, LGBT youth, especially those in rural areas, reported 42 percent more online abuse than straight youth. Additionally, LGBT youth were twice as likely to report being harassed via text message.
