A 'Complicated' look at teens and technology - Los Angeles Times

A 'Complicated' look at teens and technology - Los Angeles Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Dr. danah boyd (she prefers to style her name in lowercase letters) is a cutting-edge scholar of technology (at Microsoft Research Center, New York University, and Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society) and a youth advocate with the daunting research skills of an anthropologist and the political zeal of an activist. Her first book, "It's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens" (Yale University Press: 296 pp., $25), proves she is a writer and thinker in a category of her own invention.

Resource Based Economy

The term and meaning of a Resource Based Economy was originated by Jacque Fresco. It is a holistic socio-economic system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. The premise upon which this system is based is that the Earth is abundant with plentiful resource; our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter productive to our survival.

Can the Internet democratise capitalism?

Can the Internet democratise capitalism? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Technological fixes to time-honoured problems are all the rage these days. Bitcoin is meant to fix money, social media are seen as an antidote to Rupert Murdoch and assorted tyrants, networked robots are to help countries like Japan deal with demographic declines etc. Perhaps the largest claim is that the Internet has helped (or is about to help) democratise capitalism. Ten years ago that claim struck me as both fascinating and dubious. So, I sat down and wrote an article about it (circa 2004). Its gist: The Internet is a wonderful leveller. But democracy requires a great deal more than mere ‘levelling’. Primarily, it requires political institutions that enable the economically weak to have a decisive say on policy against the interests of the rich and powerful. Ten years later, I am re-visiting this question, under the shadow of a global crisis that made it even harder to convert an e’Demos into genuine e’Democracy. What follows is an updated version of the original paper.[1] (Click here for a pdf version or just read on.)

The problems Bitcoin doesn't solve

The problems Bitcoin doesn't solve | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Part of Bitcoin's controversial status relates to the fact that, from the very beginning, it was envisioned as an alternative to gold (see: Bit gold). Among other things, gold is an insurance policy that people have against unbacked government money. However, because it's not easily usable,  fungible, and relatively volatile, it's hard to imagine gold as your primary day-to-day currency.  The same goes for Bitcoin.

What excites is the development, by Bitcoin enthusiasts, known as miners, of a super-efficient money transmission network on the internet, that bypasses the official banking and money transmission systems - or at least it is a hermetically sealed monetary world until holders of the virtual currency want to buy a hamburger or motor car and endeavour to convert their Bitcoins into dollars, pounds or other forms of legal tender.

The Rise of the Ethical Hacktivist - LinuxInsider.com

The Rise of the Ethical Hacktivist - LinuxInsider.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The main problem with hacktivism "remains with the legislators and officials who fail to see things in analog-equivalent terms," said Piratpartiet's Rick Falkvinge. "If getting documents to a reporter was OK in the pre-Internet age as part of our checks and balances on power, then it has to be OK in the digital age, too." Yet "many powerholders freak out at the slightest occurrence of pentesting." - See more at: http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/The-Rise-of-the-Ethical-Hacktivist-80042.html#sthash.T8g7Zkki.dpuf

Long live the link, an interview with David de Ugarte - Computerklaus | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On February 14th, a council of ministers passed a reform on the copyright laws in Spain. According to the reform, content aggregators including Google News, Yahoo News, Bing News and Spain’s famous Menéame would have to depart from part of their income in favor of the original content publishers. As for now it is uncertain how, at what percentage and when this tax will be effective. Google alone is supposed to have had a publicity income in Spain during 2013 close to US$ 50 million and with perspectives to increase by 14% its turnover in 2014.
