3 simple things GitHub can do for science | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The topic “GitHub for Science” has been explored quite a few times before (1, 2, 3, 4) and with good reason: it is quite exciting to envision what breakthroughs in scientific collaboration could come from GitHub backed explorations, with substantial capital

▶ Keiser Report: Capitalism 2.0 (E551) - YouTube

In this episode of the Keiser Report, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert discuss Bitcoin 2.0. The currency application of Bitcoin was version 1.0, now there are dozens of new and innovative ideas riding the blockchain and, in the process, creating Capitalism 2.0. In the second half, Max interviews Reggie Middleton of BoomBustBlog.com about his own Bitcoin 2.0 application for hedging. Reggie says that if Bitcoin were a car, it would be one which also comes with its own road and which can go faster than any other car on the road and pay no tolls - it is an intelligent currency, unlike dumb fiat.

Reviving the spirit of democracy - Phys.Org | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Just as voting participation rates have fallen over the last 40 years, civic engagement is on the decline in the United States, too. But there is some hope for a turnaround, says Peter Levine in his new book, We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For: The Promise of Civic Renewal in America (Oxford University Press), in which he offers explanations about why so few people are involved in their communities, provides examples where activism has worked and suggests some idealistic goals.

Beyond Civilized and Primitive

Beyond Civilized and Primitive | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Western industrial society tells a story about itself that goes like this: "A long time ago, our ancestors were 'primitive'. They lived in caves, were stupid, hit each other with clubs, and had short, stressful lives in which they were constantly on the verge of starving or being eaten by saber-toothed cats. Then we invented 'civilization', in which we started growing food, being nice to each other, getting smarter, inventing marvelous technologies, and everywhere replacing chaos with order. It's getting better all the time and will continue forever."

Near Future Design: the perception of a "new possible" and a new role for Design

Near Future Design: the perception of a "new possible" and a new role for Design | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Futurology, the study of the future, is a science, art and practice which postulates possible futures. It highlights, in the process, the importance of their characterisation asmultiples and plural: many possible and alternative futures, not a single, monolithic one. Thus exposing the limits of clairvoyance, of prediction and of combinatorial, probabilistic and statistical calculus, in respect of the possibility to conceive (and actuate) possible and preferable futures.

When it comes to opening up your work there is, ironically, a bit of a secret. Here it is: being open - in open science, open source software, or any other open community - can be hard. Sometimes it can be harder than being closed.

Bitcoin, Litecoin Mining: 5 Steps To Building A Future In Digital Currency - International Business Times

Bitcoin, Litecoin Mining: 5 Steps To Building A Future In Digital Currency - International Business Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It seems like a scene out of a late night infomercial. A man steps out of a fancy car, or off of a big expensive yacht, and starts his sales speech. “Make thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of dollars all from the comfort of your own home. How?! By mining for bitcoin!” Dropping into everyone’s lexicon late last year, bitcoin boomed in 2013, going from $13 to $900 on a roller coaster of a ride. Other cryptocurrencies called alt coins, like litecoin and peercoin, gained exposure through bitcoin’s fame. Mining these coins can provide a significant income to anyone willing to spend the time and money. Here are five steps to take to start a cryptocurrency mining career.

Tech firms risk losing their cool with elitist tendencies - Irish Independent | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The episode, along with the controversy over Google limo-buses using San Francisco bus stops to pick up workers, illustrates an emerging problem among the tech community: elitism. Many outwardly friendly men and women who work in tech firms are starting to believe they're a cut above others. There is plenty of reinforcement for this view, too, not least from a media (myself included) that allows claims of social 'missions' to pass by without a sufficiently rigorous challenge.

“Reputation–based governance is a way of executing (and as we will see, possibly, of choosing) policies that hinges on the reputation of the actors involved, by a systematic use of an appropriate digital information system that computes reputation measures and makes them accessible to all.” [http://www.firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/2010]

WikiQuals : Participatory Learning for Participatory Democracy

WikiQuals : Participatory Learning for Participatory Democracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Background; WikiQuals is a project testing ways of using the post-hoc accreditation of learning activities as a way of replacing high-stakes assessment in education systems. WikiQuals is based on the Emergent Learning Model and is part of a process to test the “formal” part of the model, concerning post-hoc accreditation. It also relates to the Ambient Learning City project which is focussing on new forms of organising the social processes of learning and testing, both of which are based on the Open Context Model of Learning by Learner-Generated Contexts. This is discussed in detail on the Heutagogic Archives blog and best viewed on the Craft of Teaching 2011 slides.
