Digital rights and freedoms: Part 1

Digital rights and freedoms: Part 1 | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This article launches a new section of the Great Charter Convention dedicated to debate and analysis of democracy, politics and freedom in the digital age. The issues around state power and surveillance raised by Edward Snowden’s revelations should be an important theme in the upcoming general election, while the symbolic double anniversary of Magna Carta (aged 800) and the web (aged 25) offers an opportunity for critical reflection on how to upgrade fundamental liberties in response to new threats and re-imagine how technology can serve the common good.

Common Rights to Water and Land - P2P Foundation

Common Rights to Water and Land - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"We, social movements, grassroots organizations and civil society organizations engaged in the defence of the rights to land and water, gathered in October 2014 in Dakar at the African Social Forum. We are fighting and protesting against natural resource grabbing, especially water and land grabbing of our Commons, and against the systematic violations of the associated human rights. Sharing our ideas led to acknowledgement of the essential linkage between our struggles, given the inextricable nature of land and water grabbing. We met again at the World Social Forum in Tunis in March 2015 to continue this dialogue with movements and organizations from all over the world in order to broaden this convergence.

Digital rights and freedoms: Part 2 - Open Democracy

Digital rights and freedoms: Part 2 - Open Democracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The net has the potential to revolutionize democracy with an informed citizenry empowered to deliberate and decide on key issues. Yet current trends strengthen anti-democratic forces. In addition to concerns over privacy, there is an urgent need to address how the public realm is being hollowed out by corporate interests and advertisers. The ideal of democracy presupposes a shared public sphere in which citizens can construct, debate and decide on collective projects. Law of Requisite Variety - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"Specialization is an inescapable consequence of the Law of Requisite Variety (Ashby's Law). Although "variety" can be defined precisely in theory, in practice it's more useful to think of it as a rather fuzzy "measure of what we can each cope with" (the word "requisite" helping to define the context in which the "coping" must take place).
