Why Is Innovation So Hard?

Why Is Innovation So Hard? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
What business today does not want to be more innovative? In business parlance, “innovation” has reached a glorified position—like “customer centricity,” it is deemed to be a strategic necessity. But it is hard to define.

“Foundups are Ideas for saving our planet, launched locally, funded globally, owned collectively. | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I have had the opportunity to spend the last 10 years living in rural Japan intensely looking and researching the challenges facing our planet. What I discovered is they ALL can be traced to our "insane" startup business mode.  Our planet is facing collapse if we do not pivot. Foundups is such a pivot.

Space Is Now a Factory

Space Is Now a Factory | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
We may talk about "space tourism" as a specialized form of space travel; even the most cutting-edge space exploration, though, is disconcertingly similar to the basic experience of Earth-bound voyaging. You pack your bags, trying your best to plan for every circumstance that might arise while you're away, and then you're stuck with what you've brought. In space's case, the suitcases in question may be spacecraft and the tools required may be slightly more complex than voltage converters and travel-size shampoos ... but the idea's the same: If you'll need something on your trip to space, you have to bring it with you.

When Citizen Engagement Saves Lives (and what we can learn from it)

When Citizen Engagement Saves Lives (and what we can learn from it) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
When it comes to the relationship between participatory institutions and development outcomes, participatory budgeting stands out as one of the best examples out there. For instance, in a paper recently published in World Development,  Sonia Gonçalves finds that municipalities that adopted participatory budgeting in Brazil “favoured an allocation of public expenditures that closely matched the popular preferences and channeled a larger fraction of their total budget to key investments in sanitation and health services.”  As a consequence, the author also finds that this change in the allocation of public expenditures “is associated with a pronounced reduction in the infant mortality rates for municipalities which adopted participatory budgeting.”

What You Won't Learn In An Economics Degree: Ecological Economics - Post-Crash Economics Society

What You Won't Learn In An Economics Degree: Ecological Economics - Post-Crash Economics Society | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The UoM Post-Crash Economics Society were lucky to have Kate Raworth from the University of Oxford present her work on Ecological Economics. Ecological Economics is perhaps one of the most important ways of thinking alternatively about the economy, and creates a real conversation about sustainability and the economy’s place within the ecosystem. To view the economy as an ever expanding source of resources and focus our ambitions only on economic growth is futile, as the economy is bounded by the limits of the ecosystem imposed by nature.

Let’s Make Bitcoin The Biggest Humanitarian Tool The World Has Ever Seen

Let’s Make Bitcoin The Biggest Humanitarian Tool The World Has Ever Seen | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Instead of creating a connected civic safety net, it seems like tech platforms simply amplified messages and images from ungovernable parts of the world. Boko Haram kidnapped girls in Nigeria, and we fought back with mostly futile hashtags. ISIS broadcast its brutality with regular video updates. Russian leader Vladimir Putin perfected networked information warfare in Crimea. Online drug lords distributed their contraband, tarnishing the image of bitcoin — the first global peer-to-peer financial system.

Madrid, Spain - Beer and snacks are served at a makeshift bar in a small civic centre in Madrid's Carabanchel district. About 50 people have gathered on a Friday evening, and with the children of some playing noisily downstairs, it might seem at first glance to be a group of friends socialising.

Category:Economics - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
When making decisions about production or consumption, humans should consider factors beyond price or utility. Such a goal requires careful consideration of certain planetary boundaries such as “what affects the existence of the planet?”; “how much greenhouse gas can we put in?”; “how much water can we take out?”, “what is killing the ocean food chain?”. Raworth also briefly brought up philosopher Michael Sandel’s idea that we cannot monetise morals and so we should allocate by what is right rather than just by the market.

Designing change

Designing change | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Mainstream thinking sees a community on a different level from the individuals who form it. The social is seen as separate from the individuals. From a Designing Change -point of view, this would mean different plans and actions on the individual level and different plans and actions on the communal level. And this is how we often think.

The Techno-Leviathan as the Technocratic Politics of the Bitcoin Ledger | P2P Foundation

The Techno-Leviathan as the Technocratic Politics of the Bitcoin Ledger | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
You do not escape the world of big corporates and big government by wishing for a trustless set of technologies that collectively resemble a technocratic crypto-sovereign. Rather, you use technology as a tool within ongoing political battles, and you maintain an ongoing critical outlook towards it. The concept of the decentralised blockchain is powerful. The cold, distrustful edge of cypherpunk, though, is only empowering when it is firmly in the service of creative warm-blooded human communities situated in the physical world of dirt and grime. Perhaps this means de-emphasising the focus on how blockchains can be used to store digital assets or property, and focusing rather on those without assets.
