Hamburg Now Has an Algae-Powered Building

Hamburg Now Has an Algae-Powered Building | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Last spring, Arup, the design and engineering firm that brought the world the Centre Pompidou and the Sydney Opera House, unveiled their latest hypermodern architectural creation in Hamburg. From the outside, the surface of the 15-unit apartment building just looks like a bubbling green lava lamp stretched over an entire building. But those moving bubbles serve a function: they help to feed and order the living algae embedded within the Bio Intelligent Quotient (BIQ) building’s exterior skin. In turn, the 8-foot by 2-foot glass panels of green scuzz—the building’s $6.58 million bioreactor façade—power the entire structure, making it the world’s first algae-powered and theoretically fully self-sufficient building ever.

How much would you sacrifice to change the world?

How much would you sacrifice to change the world? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
I know from personal experience that to launch and grow a social enterprise – even one as modest as my own micro-business school, Aidha – is no small feat. But to build an organization like the eyecare hospital Aravind Eye, or BRAC, which empowers the poor, or Doi Tung, which has become Thailand’s social “incubator”, fostering new businesses … that’s big. That is to fundamentally change the world.

Sustainability in Higher Education « sustainability advocate | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the case of the newly created, all video collection, Sustainability in Higher Education, the inspiration was the 2014 Annual Conference of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) held here in Portland, Oregon, the last week in October.  The video interviews we conducted at the conference form the basis for this special collection and were combined with other speakers from previous AASHE conferences as will future conference video content.  Over 2,000 faculty and students attended this year putting to rest the idea that sustainability is a passing fad.  An even higher attendance rate is expected next Fall in Minneapolis, Minnesota where the best of campus sustainability practices will be in the spotlight along with thought leaders, student advocates, and faculty members.

Environmentally Extended Input-Output Model - P2P Foundation

Environmentally Extended Input-Output Model - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"by estimating in monetary terms the financial risk from unpriced natural capital inputs to production, across business sectors at a regional level. By using an environmentally extended input-output model (EEIO), it also estimates, at a high level, how these may flow through global supply chains to producers of consumer goods. It demonstrates that some business activities do not generate sufficient profit to cover their natural resource use and pollution costs. However, businesses and investors can take account of natural capital costs in decision making to manage risk and gain competitive advantage." AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) and the Center for American Progress have announced a groundbreaking report that quantifies the investment and technology deployment needed for the United States to do its part to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. Each one of the community members were initially handcuffed at gunpoint. It was called “The Garden of Eden Community,” and was totally self sustainable. You can read more about that here.
