How can you make a computer program learn as quickly, if not quicker, than man? Give it the internet, and wait to see what it does. Using the web, experts now want computers to figure things out for themselves.

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » When sharing isn’t caring | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In the beginning, there was sharing. That, at least, is the story according to Dominik Wind, a German environmental activist with a genial smile and a cycling cap whom I met in Paris while attending a conference earlier this month about the sharing economy. Years ago, out of curiosity, Wind visited Samoa for half a year; he found that people shared tools, provisions and even sexual partners with their neighbors. Less encumbered by industrial civilization, they appeared to share with an ease and forthrightness long forgotten in the world Wind knew back home.

Crowdsourcing is based on the idea that under certain conditions, crowds can be wiser than experts. Some collection platforms focus solely on ideas that receive the highest number of votes. But do top-rated ideas really capture the full wisdom of the crowd?

What Wikipedia has done for knowledge, a San Francisco company called CrowdMed is betting it can do for medicine. Send your symptoms and a nominal fee to CrowdMed.com, and dozens of medical professionals, students and average Joes will crowdsource — that is, share their knowledge and expertise — to help diagnose what’s wrong with you.

SOCIAL MEDIA: Crowdsourcing - The Wisdom of the Masses - YouTube

Always looking for a competitive edge, companies have begun to crowdsource using the collaborative power of the internet. Crowdsourcing is all about taping into the power of your consumers, acknowledging that many customers interested in an organization or a company are also going to be extremely knowledgeable about your products. Crowdsourcing also gives companies the opportunity to test products before they hit the mass market. From designing their own t-shirts, to measuring craters on Mars for NASA, this ability to harness our collective talents all over the world is one of the most powerful tool to bring about social change.

Welcome to the power of the crowd - Business Spectator

Welcome to the power of the crowd - Business Spectator | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

By tapping into the motivations of individuals, whether that be through challenges, a sense of purpose, their desire for mastery, or recognition, organisations can harness the enthusiasm of online communities for a minimal amount of risk and expense. However, the use of crowdsourcing requires diligent planning. Tasks must be divided and clear objectives set to prevent inefficiencies and ensure that crowdsourced efforts produce solutions that can be reintegrated into the business.

Wired 14.06: The Rise of Crowdsourcing

Claudia Menashe needed pictures of sick people. A project director at the National Health Museum in Washington, DC, Menashe was putting together a series of interactive kiosks devoted to potential pandemics like the avian flu. An exhibition designer had created a plan for the kiosk itself, but now Menashe was looking for images to accompany the text. Rather than hire a photographer to take shots of people suffering from the flu, Menashe decided to use preexisting images – stock photography, as it’s known in the publishing industry.

Over here the situation is very bad, and people abroad are completely disinformed about it. Every day we read nonsense and bullshit on Grillo by people who completely ignore the reactionary, authoritarian nature of his movement. A harsh reality is biting our arses and we need to send a message in a bottle right now.

Crowdsourcing Economies with Collaboration - Innovation Excellence (blog)

Crowdsourcing Economies with Collaboration - Innovation Excellence (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

According to Venture Capital (VC) database CB Insights, the total amount of venture capital financing hit $29.2 billion across 3354 deals in 2013. What’s interesting is the number of overall VC deals has remained relatively flat over the past three years, as have the total investments (holding Q1 of 2012 as an outlier). But, don’t we hear of new ventures and new deals being made all the time? I personally haven’t taken the time to calculate all the funding transactions for new ventures over the past several years. However, there is another industry taking hold that might be the culprit as to why we are hearing about new businesses/ventures receiving funding, but that aren’t translating into these market statistics below (data from cbinsights.com).

P2P Foundation » Blog Archive » Is Sharewashing the new Greenwashing? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There’s a debate going on about what a “sharing economy” actually constitutes – and that’s a good thing. The fact that there’ll be no end to this debate will be stressful to those who’d like some tidy answers to parrot.  From our point of view, the mutulization of resources and the decrease of “consumerism for its own sake” are good things, but we have to ask ourselves … what happens to the mutualization of the value created? To keep the conversation going, we present this article by Anthony Kalamar and originally published at Opednews.com.

The Rise of the Voluntariat | Jacobin

The Rise of the Voluntariat | Jacobin | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The voluntariat performs skilled work that might still command a wage without compensation, allegedly for the sake of the public good, regardless of the fact that it also contributes directly and unambiguously to the profitability of a corporation. Like the proletariat, then, the voluntariat permits the extraction of surplus value through its labor.
