Molly Barton: What would Wu-Tang do? | The Bookseller | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Editor's Note: Molly Barton joins us here with the first of her articles as a regular contributor to The FutureBook. Barton's eye here is on "the rise of creative collectives." My own favourite creative collective is Magnum Photos, formed in Paris by Henri Cartier-Bresson and associates in 1947. Its photographers retain copyright on their work. And the collective's staffers support the photographer-members — not direct them. A former global digital director with Penguin, Barton writes, "The publishing houses have little to no consumer awareness and continually cede brand status to authors (which is why traditional book marketing is so inefficient)." Authors' best hope, she suggests, may be in "pooling their talents and early fan bases." — Porter Anderson

Proposed Strategy for the Commons Movement in 2015 - P2P Foundation

Proposed Strategy for the Commons Movement in 2015 - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We are definitely going to a period of dislocation in 2015. The Greek debacle has shown the difficulty of any strategy based on national sovereignty and the end of any real political democracy for European nations ; the difficulties in China , Brazil and elsewhere show the period of high growth for emerging economies has come to an end; and the success of candidates like Donald Trump, which obtains 40% approval rating by promising to deport fifteen million people, shows the potential return of barbarism in the heart of the over-developed world.

Transition Towards a Food Commons Regime - P2P Foundation

Transition Towards a Food Commons Regime - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This paper analyses the main fault lines of the industrial food system and the consequences of the absolute commodification of food. Then, using the food regime theory and exploring the developments in the industrial food system (mainstream) and the urban alternative food networks (AFNs) and rural food sovereignty movement (innovative niches), the author proposes a transition pathway (the re-commonification of food) towards a food commons regime in which primacy rests in its feature as human beings’ absolute need and the different dimensions of food are properly valued, in opposition to the corporate mono-dimensional valuation of food as a commodity. In order to crowdsource this transition, this paper argues the food sovereignty movement and the AFNs need to grow together, beyond individual organisations, to knit a different and bigger food web capable of confronting the industrial food system for the common good. This ongoing transition that will span decades is to be steered by a tricentric governance system (urban and rural civic collective actions for food, partner states and social private enterprises) that enables access and promote food in all its dimensions through a multiplicity of open structures and sustainable peer-to-peer practices aimed at sharing, co-producing and trading food and knowledge. Unlike the market, the food commons are about cooperation, sharing, stewardship, equity, self-production, sustainability, collectiveness, embeddedness and direct democracy from local to global. Shifting the dominant discourse from the private sphere to the commons arena will open up a whole new world of economic, political and societal innovations, not least the Universal Food Coverage.

A review of Paul Mason's PostCapitalism: what about the precariat ? | P2P Foundation

A review of Paul Mason's PostCapitalism: what about the precariat ? | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Let’s look at the economics first. By applying Marx to Kondratieff’s long wave theory, Mason gives an answer to the ‘end of history’ question far more believable than the now ludicrous faith in the triumph of neoliberalism. We feel stuck, he says, because we are. In Kondratieff’s theory, capitalism has a rhythm: there are waves of upswings and downswings that should last approximately 50 years. In Mason’s theory, we are today stuck in the fourth wave, which should have ended with the economical upheaval and power struggles of the late ‘70s. Organised labour should have successfully resisted the lowering of wages, so forcing capitalists to innovate themselves out of the crisis: “working-class resistance can be technologically progressive… it forces the new paradigm to emerge on a higher plane of productivity and consumption”. But class struggle failed to fulfill that role. Instead, in the ‘80s, capitalists were able to slash wages in the centres of global capitalism like the UK and the US, go for low-value production, and mask the unsustainability of an undead economic model with a huge wave of financialisation. The long-wave pattern was disrupted. That’s because, Mason believes, we are now at the end of the capitalist era.

Reclaiming the Economic Surplus by Liberating the Economic Commons - P2P Foundation

Reclaiming the Economic Surplus by Liberating the Economic Commons - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Money is a social relationship based on the monetisation of mutual credit rights and obligations. Monetised credit is an emergent property that arises in the context of a community of producer-consumers (prosumers). In other words, money is a common good rooted in the Economic Commons. As such, it is a universal cultural phenomenon. Monetary instruments, such as currency, cheques and bills of exchange represent social technologies devised to facilitate the proof of, transfer and discharge of monetised credit rights and obligations (money).

UN|COMMONS | The Fight For Common Wealth | October 22-24 | Workshops, Talks, Performances + Cooking | Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg Platz | Berlin | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Who has access and whose access is denied? What is the value of these resources and how might they help or hinder us in overcoming the various crises of our times? Do we need rules, guidelines and agreements to govern use and access, and if so, what sort? The Berliner Gazette and the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg Platz invite you to discuss these urgent issues at the UN|COMMONS conference. The three-day event will focus on those resources that are being privatised or made inaccessible, but which could become common property in the future – commons that are as yet uncommon. In short: UN|COMMONS that challenge us, the people, to make a collective effort towards democratic and sustainable forms of human togetherness."

Report: The Crisis of the Pastoral Commons | P2P Foundation

Report: The Crisis of the Pastoral Commons | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“Pastoral system and pastoralism as a way of life and viable economic system find little space in development discourse. The issues relating to pastoral communities and their dependent resources get rare notice of policy makers and planners in national development agenda. The importance and interconnectedness of pastoral system and pasture commons, the resource base, has been missing from public consciousness and policy discourse as a result of which it has been an all time area of negligence from development planning and policy making. Such critical interconnectedness between dependent communities with their resources is largely misplaced while framing the policies of governance.
