Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

Bracing for Bitcoin in Buenos Aires - Bitcoin Magazine

Bracing for Bitcoin in Buenos Aires - Bitcoin Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There is a large, imposing steel door along a popular street, in the bustling downtown business hub of Buenos Aires. There are no visible markings, or signs, that would indicate to passers-by what is housed inside. And given the time of day, it may take a few buzzes before anyone answers the door. But when someone does get around to letting you in, you’ll quickly find yourself in the nascent epicenter of Buenos Aires’ burgeoning Bitcoin industry.

How Can the Bitcoin Blockchain Help Humanity?

How Can the Bitcoin Blockchain Help Humanity? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The blockchain is probably one of the most important factors behind Bitcoin’s success: a transparent ledger book, available to everyone, which allows “universal consensus,” in the words of Gavin Wood. Financial industry was among the first ones to take benefit of such system, with the invention of the first decentralized currency, bitcoin. Thanks to this, “The trading has quickly become as easy as buying music on iTunes” according to Michael Geike. However, here are several applications in more general areas, and that rely on the awesome technology the blockchain is.

FTC takes on Big Data STAVRA gets a little less complicated More Snowden ... - Politico | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

DRIVING THE DAY: THE FTC TAKES ON BIG DATA — The Federal Trade Commission kicks off a workshop on Big Data and discrimination this morning at 9 a.m. The daylong event is aimed at taking a deeper dive into how giant data sets can affect low-income and underserved consumers, especially in light of the White House's report on the subject, which raised concerns that the technology could be used to "digitally redefine unwanted groups" and "enable new forms of discrimination." Chairwoman Edith Ramirez will give the first keynote, and look for her to once again emphasize her concerns with Big Data. "As businesses segment consumers for the purpose of marketing products, setting prices, and tailoring customer service, the worry is that existing disparities will be exacerbated," she'll say, per prepared remarks.

A virtual revolution

A virtual revolution | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

TUNE into one of Saudi Arabia’s television channels and you are likely to find a stuffy report praising the government or a sheikh spinning a dreary sermon. Little wonder that so many Saudis turn to YouTube and other online broadcasters for light relief. That has led to the emergence of new media companies, mainly in the more liberal coastal city of Jeddah, dedicated to amusing the kingdom’s growing population.

Open Source 3D Printing as a Means of Learning - P2P Foundation

Open Source 3D Printing as a Means of Learning - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"This research project attempts to examine to what extent the technological capabilities of open source 3D printing could serve as a means of learning and communication. The learning theory of constructionism is used as a theoretical framework in creating an experimental educational scenario focused on 3D design and printing. In this paper, we document our experience and discuss our findings from a three-month project run in two high schools in Ioannina, Greece. 33 students were tasked to collaboratively design and produce, with the aid of an open source 3D printer and a 3D design platform, creative artifacts. Most of these artifacts carry messages in the Braille language. Our next goal, which defined this project’s context, is to send the products to blind children inaugurating a novel way of communication and collaboration amongst blind and non-blind students. Our experience, so far, is positive arguing that 3D printing and design can electrify various literacies and creative capacities of children in accordance with the spirit of the interconnected, information-based world."
