Essay of the Day: Commons-Based Reciprocity Licenses To Advance Reciprocity for the Commons | P2P Foundation

Essay of the Day: Commons-Based Reciprocity Licenses To Advance Reciprocity for the Commons | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The copyfarleft licensing model is a concrete proposal related to the commercial usages debate. It suggests one way to improve on “non-commercial clauses”, arguably making them more effective in reducing negative social impacts, such as wage labour being exploited in building the commons. We believe it is an interesting contribution that mostly avoids the problems mentioned above, but also has its potential drawbacks. This position paper comments on them (as well as on some merits of this model), and proposes an alternative or complementary model that attempts to solve some of those drawbacks.”

Feminist Theory and Free Software - P2P Foundation

Feminist Theory and Free Software - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
"Feminist scholars and feminist expertise are rarely mentioned in the context of FS studies, and if so, relating mainly to topics such as the “gender gap” (Kelty 2008) or the “coproduction of gender and technology” (Faulkner 2001; Oudshoorn et al 2004)3. However, we claim that instead of merely assessing the gender ratios in the free software community, feminist theory can help to better understand the epistemology of free software – or more precisely the entanglement of epistemology, ethics and ontology; of knowing, being and acting. That is, while we agree that the free software movement has had profound effects on the epistemic practices involved in software creation, i.e. the ways in which software if produced, improved and modified collectively, it is insufficient to focus only the epistemic dimension. Instead, a performative understanding of knowledge requires us to understand and account for the fact that epistemic practices are inherently ethical practices because a) instead of merely representing what is there, they are also generative and b) they may have differential effects on different agents.

Phi Beta Iota: From distributed renewable energy it is a small step to “free” energy, which in turn provided unlimited desalinated water for hydroponic agriculture (code for death to Monsanto and pesticides). Also significant in the above the maturation of open value accounting. Not yet evolving at a discernible or satisfactory rate are information technology tools for public intelligence and mobilization, or alternatives to the mobilization protocols centered on inevitably corrupt political dictatorships and duopolies that block all others from access to political and thus economic and social power. Two emergent terms or Open Cooperatism and Fusion Economics.

The anticipated failure of startup urbanism | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The city is not a company; community is not a brand; citizenship cannot be mistaken for consumption. .. The city is not a startup. It is not a market than needs to be disrupted in order to stimulate competition and growth. The city is not a platform that can be hacked. Despite the optimistic talk, it is an old language that is being spoken here: Startup Urbanism is gentrification by another name.

Critical Power of Free Software - P2P Foundation

Critical Power of Free Software - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In sum, I am arguing that one particular way in which FS comes to constitute a material critique of computing epistemology is when the act of coding confronts forms typical of the wage nexus. It is then that the absurdities of bending coding to the requirements of the reproduction of capital become most evident, and thus when a “free” ethic is appears in great contrast to a profit motive. In pointing this out, I intend to be taking a small step toward specifying the conditions under which FS practice does indeed become material critique, not just that it can do so."

An intentional egalitarian community as a small-scale implementation of postcapitalist, peer production model of economy. Part I : Work as a spontanous, voluntary contribution | P2P Foundation

An intentional egalitarian community as a small-scale implementation of postcapitalist, peer production model of economy. Part I : Work as a spontanous, voluntary contribution | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In this article, I will present egalitarian communities, mainly Acorn community in Virginia, to examine whether the postcapitalist mode of production in the physical world can be introduced by establishing intentional communities. It should be noted that the opinions presented here are not necessary those of the founders or members of the community where I have done research. I interpret my findings with regard to their significance for this economic change and their reflection on the postcapitalist mode of production. Acorn community does not define itself as a peer production project so the following analysis is not an evaluation of the implementation of peer production theory into practice. It is instead an extrapolation from the practice to how peer production organizations in the physical world could operate in the current system and in the future.

How Facebook Killed the Internet - Center for Research on Globalization

How Facebook Killed the Internet - Center for Research on Globalization | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Many people from the grassroots to the elites are thrilled about the social media phenomenon.  Surely some of the few people who will read this are among them.  We throw around phrases like “Facebook revolution” and we hail these new internet platforms that are bringing people together all over the world.  And I’m not suggesting they don’t have their various bright sides.  Nor am I suggesting you should stop using social media platforms, including Facebook.  That would be like telling someone in Texas they should bike to work, when the whole infrastructure of every city in the state is built for sports utility vehicles.
