Common Libraries - P2P Foundation

Common Libraries - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

""We believe there is an urgent and pressing need to evolve libraries so that they may serve as bastions of a 21st century knowledge commons, functioning as trusted and impartial platforms for the production, exchange and consumption of knowledge and know-how. We are therefore using our expertise in design, technology, community engagement and social enterprise to work closely with library service users and providers to that end. Our ultimate aim is to empower people to co-design and deliver new library services in our increasingly open source society, such that they are responsive to technological advancement and fast-changing local needs, as well as positioned to make the most of emergent socio-economic opportunities. The intention, then, is to revitalise the public library ethos and render library services more relevant, useful and sustainable in their appeal to (and involvement of) broad-ranging audiences in our digital age."

The Alternative Energy Matrix | Do the Math

The Alternative Energy Matrix | Do the Math | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"we face the end of a golden era of energy. Sure, we managed to make scientific and cultural progress based on energy from animals, slaves, and firewood prior to discovering the fossil fuels. But it was in unlocking our one-time inheritance that we really came into our own. Soon, we will see a yearly decrease in our trust fund dividend, forcing us to either adapt to less or try to fill the gap with replacements. What this post and the series preceding it demonstrates is that we do not have a delightful menu from which to select our future. Most of the options leave a bad taste of one form or the other.

even thoug the author is clearly on the "pragmatic" science front, not putting CO2 emissions as top priority,  the info provided with the matrix is rather interesting.

not surprisingly, the "soluton"  being to mix them.

You’re witnessing the death of neoliberalism – from within | Aditya Chakrabortty | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

hat does it look like when an ideology dies? As with most things, fiction can be the best guide. In Red Plenty, his magnificent novel-cum-history of the Soviet Union, Francis Spufford charts how the communist dream of building a better, fairer society fell apart.

Town Halls for Social Change - Birmingham | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Co-working for social change is a growing global phenomenon, headlined by the organisations like the Impact Hub network or the Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto. Across the world we are seeing ever-greater numbers of mission-driven innovators co-locate in order to maximise their success and impact. From humble beginnings in a leaky loft in Islington, the Impact Hub network now has over 82 spaces and 12,000+ members worldwide, from Singapore to Seattle; Johannesburg to Yerevan; Sao Paolo to Stockholm; Birmingham to Berlin.

Can Economic Growth Last? | Do the Math

Can Economic Growth Last? | Do the Math | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

As we saw in the previous post, the U.S. has expanded its use of energy at a typical rate of 2.9% per year since 1650. We learned that continuation of this energy growth rate in any form of technology leads to a thermal reckoning in just a few hundred years (not the tepid global warming, but boiling skin!). What does this say about the long-term prospects for economic growth, if anything?

Seeing wetiko creative brief - /The Rules

Seeing wetiko creative brief - /The Rules | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Wetiko is an Algonquin word for a cannibalistic spirit that is driven by greed, excess and selfish consumption (in Ojibwa it is windingo, wintiko in Powhatan). It deludes its host into believing that cannibalizing the life-force of others (others in the broad sense, including animals and other forms of Gaian life) is a logical and morally upright way to live.

Beyond Blockchain: Simple Scalable Cryptocurrencies - The World of Deep Wealth - Medium

I clarify the core elements of cryptocurrency and outline a different approach to designing such currencies rooted in biomimicry (how nature functions and scales). I distinguish efficiencies of distributing process as a foundation for decentralized data and decision-making. Then I illustrate an implementation of a currency using these principles to bring a centuries old practice into the digital era. I address a basic vulnerability showing how these design principles can be deployed on a large scale. Finally, I confront social challenges involved in managing crypto systems and an invitation to partnership in building platform which addresses these issues.
