A mature understanding of the role of the internet in the Middle Eastern revolutions | P2P Foundation

A mature understanding of the role of the internet in the Middle Eastern revolutions | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Tufekci: Autocratic regimes don’t stay in power for decades by governing randomly; rather, they do so by following a tried-and-tested playbook of strategic censorship, isolation and repression of dissent. And control over information flows and the public sphere is a key element of this model of autocratic regime. Regimes in the Middle East actively sought to prevent and control the spread of information because they understood that keeping sparks of dissent from lighting prairie fires of uprisings was crucial. Dissidents were punished disproportionately – long prison sentence for the smallest offenses, torture — not just because the security forces happened to be composed of sadists, but because of the same problem: to prevent cascades of dissent from taking off. The Internet has opened up the public sphere; it has allowed citizens to express their views and coordinate with each other. Does that always lead to revolution? No, you need the dissent to be there on the ground. But it does mean that such that regimes cannot continue to govern as before. They are forced to play a new game.

P2PVALUE project drives peer production forward - Cordis News

P2PVALUE project drives peer production forward - Cordis News | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

You may never have heard of ‘commons based peer production’ (CBPP) but you have probably heard of Linux, Wikipedia and Open Street Map which all came about thanks to the CBPP model. Peer production like this allows for the creative energy of large numbers of citizens to be coordinated, usually through a digital platform, outside of the parameters of traditional organisations resulting in the ‘public provision of commons resources’. Put simply, it uses collaborative efforts between people to build something which anyone can continue to develop and use. As this approach to production becomes increasingly widespread, it is important to investigate what factors and tools can encourage it to thrive and how sustainable CBPP projects are. And this is exactly what the EU-funded P2PVALUE project is doing.

A call for platform cooperatives | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Excerpted from Trebor Scholz: “It’s a call to workers, designers, and developers. It’s up to you: the blue pill or, well, you know the Matrix story — the red. The European left in shock after the defeat of Greece | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Six months after promising the end of austerity, the Syriza leadership had to sign an agreement which not just imposes an extreme neoliberal impoverishment of its people, but actually suspends democracy, since the agreement explicitely states that no laws can be voted without agreement of the European institutions. The radicality of this defeat is not …

The future of work in a digital world - StarTribune.com - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Individuals often feel dragooned by computers, boxed in by a drop-down box. Despite the undisputed benefits of the digital milieu, some (many?) of us may nod and chuckle at a quip by the late Ogden Nash: “Progress might have been all right once, but it has gone on too long.” Any backlash, however, is muted.
