Coral Reefs and Borneo: Can Resilience Theory Help Leaders During These ... - Huffington Post (blog) | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The authors' definition of resilience: "The capacity of a system, enterprise, or a person to maintain its core purpose and integrity in the face of dramatically changed circumstances." The book spends considerable time in the natural world, including an Australian coral reef and Borneo, the primary habitat of orangutans. Drawing a line from the natural to the social sciences, the writing makes the case that those attributes that contribute to healthy environmental ecosystems can also be developed and sustained in human organizational systems.

Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

PURITANISM, wrote H.L. Mencken, is “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy.” Half a century later, the prissiest Americans are haunted by a different fear: that they may buy cheese made by someone whose opinions they do not share. To help people avoid this calamity, a new app called BuyPartisan reveals whether any given product is made by Republicans or Democrats.

The Digital Revolution's Most Pivotal Moments - Vanity Fair

The Digital Revolution's Most Pivotal Moments - Vanity Fair | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

ust as the Industrial Revolution was driven by combining the steam engine with ingenious machinery, the Digital Revolution has been driven by two great innovations: the personal computer and the Internet. The relationship between the two was standoffish at first, and it was only after their development became intertwined that the digital economy began to transform our lives. The result was a shift in influence from an old establishment led by bankers, wise men, and a corporate elite to a new establishment led by the pioneers of technology, information, and entertainment. This digital inflection point occurred in 1994, the year that this magazine began publishing its New Establishment list.

Bracing for Bitcoin in Buenos Aires - Bitcoin Magazine | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There is a large, imposing steel door along a popular street, in the bustling downtown business hub of Buenos Aires. There are no visible markings, or signs, that would indicate to passers-by what is housed inside. And given the time of day, it may take a few buzzes before anyone answers the door. How Can the Bitcoin Blockchain Help Humanity?

How Can the Bitcoin Blockchain Help Humanity? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The blockchain is probably one of the most important factors behind Bitcoin’s success: a transparent ledger book, available to everyone, which allows “universal consensus,” in the words of Gavin Wood. Financial industry was among the first ones to take benefit of such system, with the invention of the first decentralized currency, bitcoin. Thanks to this, “The trading has quickly become as easy as buying music on iTunes” according to Michael Geike. However, here are several applications in more general areas, and that rely on the awesome technology the blockchain is.

FTC takes on Big Data STAVRA gets a little less complicated More Snowden ... - Politico | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

DRIVING THE DAY: THE FTC TAKES ON BIG DATA — The Federal Trade Commission kicks off a workshop on Big Data and discrimination this morning at 9 a.m. The daylong event is aimed at taking a deeper dive into how giant data sets can affect low-income and underserved consumers, especially in light of the White House's report on the subject, which raised concerns that the technology could be used to "digitally redefine unwanted groups" and "enable new forms of discrimination." Chairwoman Edith Ramirez will give the first keynote, and look for her to once again emphasize her concerns with Big Data. "As businesses segment consumers for the purpose of marketing products, setting prices, and tailoring customer service, the worry is that existing disparities will be exacerbated," she'll say, per prepared remarks.
