With Assembly, anyone can contribute to open source software and actually get paid

The open-source movement has produced some of the most widely utilized software in the world, a huge economic value driven by a widely dispersed community who believe contributing good work is often its own reward. Outside of the world of computer science, however, these strategies are still relatively niche. A San Francisco startup called Assembly is trying to change all that, by evolving the open-source model to easily incorporate disciplines outside coding and to include a shared profit motive as well. Today the company is announcing a $2.9 million round of funding it will use to help expand its platform.

Knowledge as a Common - Communities of production and sharing in Greece | P2P Foundation

Knowledge as a Common - Communities of production and sharing in Greece | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“The free/open source software and design communities; hackerspaces and the do-it-yourself enthusiasts; movements for an independent Internet; initiatives for free/communal wifi and open access to knowledge; permaculture communities… What do all these have in common? Are they unrelated cases or coincidences? Or could they be seen as seeds of a new civilization full of contradictions and chances for renaissance and change? This documentary — a low-budget yet sublime production — narrates the story of several Greek-based, knowledge-oriented communities that are building the world they want, within the confines of the fragmented world they want to transcend.”

How to Start A Worker Co-op

How to Start A Worker Co-op | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In the age of unemployment, downsizing, and outsourcing, where can a poor soul find a job? Well, maybe it’s time we create our own. Self-employment is an option and can seem freeing, but it’s hard to do everything yourself and find time for a non-work life. The worker coop is an alternative to the isolation of self-employment and the exploitation of traditional jobs.

Brazil's dietary guidelines are so much better than the USDA's

Brazil's dietary guidelines are so much better than the USDA's | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As anyone who has read Marion Nestle's Food Politics or Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food knows, the US Department of Agriculture's attempts to issue dietary advice have always been haunted by industry influence and a reductionist vision of nutrition science. The department finally ditched its silly pyramids a few years ago, but its guidelines remain vague and arbitrary (for example, how does dairy merit inclusion as one of five food groups?).

Robin Murray on The Potential of Cooperative Alternatives | P2P Foundation

Robin Murray on The Potential of Cooperative Alternatives | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The first great surge of co-operation took place in Britain at the dawn of the age of railways in the 1840s. It was a consumer co-operation of the industrial working class. Within 50 years it had grown into a network of more than 1,000 retail co-ops and a wholesale society that had become the largest corporate organisation in the world. By the first world war, British co-ops accounted for 40 per cent of food distribution. They owned their own factories, farms, shipping lines, banks, an insurance company and even a tea plantation in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The co-operative movement was, in the vision of one of its inspired organisers J T W Mitchell, on the way to developing an alternative economy.

The Weymouth Wire: Building Participatory Democracy

The Weymouth Wire: Building Participatory Democracy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Weymouth Wire is a new system to encourage participation in local decision-making. The idea is to use occasional (very quick) online surveys to ask people for their views on a range of local issues. As a some people don't use the internet it also gives online folk the opportunity to register their own friends, family and neighbours and catch their views by having a conversation with them in an offline manner.
