Real press reform would look at who owns our media - Left Foot Forward

Real press reform would look at who owns our media - Left Foot Forward | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

There is strong public support for a more democratic media which politicians have up to now shown no appetite to tap in to. Around three quarters of respondents quizzed in an IPPR polllast year supported limits on the overall proportion of the UK media a single person or company can own, with three quarters (76 per cent) wanting fixed limits on newspaper ownership.

"Mapping a community’s needs and resources is one of the first things that many community groups do, when beginning their journey into local change-making. See also this post from the Transition Network that positions community mapping within the context of lots of other “ingredients” needed for community change-making (The term ‘ingredients’ is the Transition term for patterns in pattern language).

Money as a Commons requires a Local Standard of Value | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
“I cannot see how money can become democratic unless its value is determined independently of the financial system just as standards of weights and measures are determined independently of those that use them as a common good.” An interesting argument by Shann Turnbull: (via email) “I cannot see how money can become democratic unless its …

Processing power limits social group size: computational evidence for the cognitive costs of sociality

Processing power limits social group size: computational evidence for the cognitive costs of sociality | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Sociality is primarily a coordination problem. However, the social (or communication) complexity hypothesis suggests that the kinds of information that can be acquired and processed may limit the size and/or complexity of social groups that a species can maintain. We use an agent-based model to test the hypothesis that the complexity of information processed influences the computational demands involved. We show that successive increases in the kinds of information processed allow organisms to break through the glass ceilings that otherwise limit the size of social groups: larger groups can only be achieved at the cost of more sophisticated kinds of information processing that are disadvantageous when optimal group size is small. These results simultaneously support both the social brain and the social complexity hypotheses.

The project will help the vulnerable ,needy and marginalized women, girls, farmers, local school teachers acquire skills and knowledge to empower the community and solve their own problems. Most teachers do not have skills to operate even their own mobile phones. They travel fifteen kilometres to check on payslips and KRA returns in nearby cyber cafes. We will establish an ICT community school to train them so that they can teach others. Women and girls will also benefit from the project fully.

I pass on this graphic illustrating the decline in total brain gray matter (nerve cell) volume in young children of middle and low socioeconomic status individuals.
