Peer production and Marxian communism: Contours of a new emerging mode of production

This article argues that communism is currently emerging as a new mode of production, namely, peer production (PP), which produces commons instead of commodity. In PP, producers produce commons through voluntary participation in distributed network-based communities of production. Each volunteer chooses the tasks she performs, the amount of time she devotes to the collective production, and the place and time of her productive activity. In terms of distribution, the digital commons are available for free on the net. The rights to relatively scarce commons are still emerging, but they might be relatively restrictive compared with rights to digital commons. Analysing this new mode of production, the article attempts to show why and how it can replace capitalism.

LittleBits, a Favorite Tool of Hardware Hackers, Is Now Cloud-Enabled - Wired | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

littleBits, whose modular kit makes hardware hacking a lot like playing with Legos, is taking its platform to the Net. The cloudBit, announced today, is a new component that’ll connect any littleBits creation to the internet, allowing it to be programmed through a simple web interface. There have been other kits like this before, powered by Raspberry Pi and Arduino—but while those remain powerful, flexible, and inter-operable, none of them possess littlBits’s plug-and-play simplicity. So with the addition of the cloudBit, littleBits could become a reasonable, DIY gateway to the Internet of Things.

"The Systems View of Life" (web video) |Fritjof Capra | Schumacher College | May 7, 2014 | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Launch of textbook by Fritjof Capra, collecting 40 years of writings with additions by coauthor Pier Luigi Luisi.  The lecture shows precise language about the science of systems, with clear references tying together research strands.  Mature systems thinkers will be reminded of concepts that they know but may not be immediately salient to their current endeavours.  Novice systems thinkers may appreciate the easy pace of the speech, with linkages to other concepts and figures in the systems community.

Emergence in Stigmergic and Complex Adaptive Systems

Emergence in Stigmergic and Complex Adaptive Systems | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Complex systems have been studied by researchers from every discipline: biology, chemistry, physics, sociology, mathematics and economics and more. Depending upon the discipline, complex systems theory has accrued many flavors. We are after a formal representation, a model that can predict the outcome of acomplex adaptive system (CAS). In this article, we look at the nature of complexity, then provide a perspective based on discrete event systems (DEVS) theory. We pin down many of the shared features between CAS and artificial systems. We begin with an overview of network science showing how adaptive behavior in these scale-free networks can lead to emergence through stigmergy in CAS. We also address how both self-organization and emergence interplay in a CAS. We then build a case for the view that stigmergic systemsare a special case of CAS. We then discuss DEVS levels of systems specifications and present the dynamic structure extensions of DEVS formalism that lends itself to a study of CAS and in turn, stigmergy. Finally, we address the shortcomings and the limitation of current DEVS extensions and propose the required augmentation to model stigmergy and CAS.
