Labour leadership: The choice at the heart of the leadership campaign

Labour leadership: The choice at the heart of the leadership campaign | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
At the core of Labour’s leadership election is a choice. Not about personalities but about two paths for Labour and Britain. Does Labour stand up to the Tories' miserable and divisive austerity policies, reinvigorating our party as a social movement to oppose them - or do we accept them or some variant of them?

Interviewed: Venture Capitalist Brad Burnham on Skinny Platforms | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Everybody just has a very clear idea that if you have a central square and everybody grazes their crops on the central square, there's no grass left. Unless you control that, either through some cooperative arrangement, or ownership arrangement, you have a tragedy. If data is a non-rival good, where's the tragedy? We can all feed on that central square without impinging in any way on the other's use of that.

Greece Contemplates Nuclear Options: May Print Euros, Launch Parallel Currency, Nationalize Banks | Zero Hedge

According to Telegraph's Ambrose Evans Pritchard who quotes what appears to be a direct quote to him from Yanis Varoufakis, Greece will, "If necessary... issue parallel liquidity and California-style IOU's, in an electronic form. We should have done it a week ago." Hardliners within the party - though not Mr Varoufakis - are demanding the head of governor Stournaras, a holdover appointee from the past conservative government.  They want a new team installed, one that is willing to draw on the central bank's secret reserves, and to take the provocative step in extremis of creating euros.

CAPS2015, the international annual event on Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and Social Innovation. The event theme is ‘Networked Social Responsibility’. The CAPS acronym covers a wide range of approaches, activities and paradigms, impossible to pull together without rough simplifications. Nonetheless, at Sigma Orionis we believe they all have in common a social responsibility dimension, that we define as caring for the common good and fostering societal changes as immediate objective or direct consequence of one’s work or engagement.

The Truth About Greece: Syriza's Creatively Ambiguous Referendum

The Truth About Greece: Syriza's Creatively Ambiguous Referendum | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It was just four months ago, though it already seems like a lifetime away, when Greece’s celebrity finance minister Yanis Varoufakis publicly stated that “creative ambiguity” won the country a “loan lifeline” from the institutions formerly known as the troika: the European Central Bank, the European Commission, and the International Monetary Fund. Despite the never-ending soap opera that is Greek crisis politics though, few would have imagined that the SYRIZA-led coalition government would succeed in outdoing itself in terms of its “creative ambiguity,” by calling a referendum which, just days before the polls open, remains remarkably unclear as to its actual meaning and potential consequences.

The gift in the heart of language. The maternal source of meaning « Mimesis International

The gift in the heart of language. The maternal source of meaning « Mimesis International | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Genevieve Vaughan offers a paradigm-shifting view of the structure of material and verbal communication, based on mother- child experience and confirmed by recent research in infant psychology. This view justifies a relational epistemology that informs the material gift economy as well as the structure of language itself. Provisioning economies give value to the receivers, and the circulation of gifts consolidates community. Understanding language as verbal gifting unites other orientation with reason to liberate us from biopathic patriarchal conceptions of humanity. Sketched against this background Vaughan introduces a conception of monetized exchange as a giftdenying and expropriating psychological mechanism, which is an unintended collective by product of verbal communication. This view stands as a warning against visions of the future in which the institutions of money and the market can be “fixed”to be more caring, and sanitized business as usual can halt the destruction of Mother Earth. Rather a gift economy, which takes as its model the mother-child interaction, the gifting in language and the gifting in mother-centered societies provides hope for a positive future.

Why we need the 'meent': re-historisizing the Dutch Commons | P2P Foundation

Why we need the 'meent': re-historisizing the Dutch Commons | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Etymologically the word ‘meent’ shares its root with ‘menigte’, which is the Dutch translation of the Latin ‘multitudo’ (Philippa et al. 2005, 179-81 and 2007, 323-24). They share a Middle Dutch adjective, ‘maneg’ meaning ‘many’ (Philippa et al. 2007, 334). Because this was the same in Old English and Old Frisian, the ‘meent’ and the …
