Nobel Laureate Stiglitz: ‘The only true and sustainable prosperity is shared prosperity’ | The Raw Story

Nobel Laureate Stiglitz: ‘The only true and sustainable prosperity is shared prosperity’ | The Raw Story | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

“It’s been clear to me that our economy has been sick for a long time,” he began, introducing a theme he would hammer home throughout the speech. “For too long, the hardworking and rule-abiding had seen their paychecks shrink or stay the same, while the rule-breakers raked in huge profits and wealth,” he said. “It made our economy sick, and our politics sick, too.”

Degrowth 2014 - Michel Bauwens on The Transition to a Sustainable Commons Society - YouTube

Degrowth will only be possible by changing the artificial scarcity-based design practices and engineering of the for-profit sector and by removing the incentive to externalize the true production costs in terms of matter and energy. A commons-oriented approach should combine global open design based in communities, local on-demand distributed manufacturing, and the use of renewable distributed energy. Along with changes in governance and ownership, it can contribute to a global phase transition.

Big-data management promises a significant shift in the way decisions are made across the economy. Abundant new sources of data from the web, sensors and smartphones, mined for patterns and insights by smart software, will mean that more and more decisions will be based on data and analysis rather than experience and intuition.

How Medieval-Style Guilds Will Remake the Tech Behind Facebook and Google | WIRED

How Medieval-Style Guilds Will Remake the Tech Behind Facebook and Google | WIRED | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Drawing on a practice that dates back to medieval times, a guild is a group of craftspeople or merchants who’ve banded together because they all do the same thing. One guild is for vintners, another for masons, and so on. There are hundreds of guilds across England, Pearce says, and each provides a way for craftspeople to share certain tricks of their craft. The members of a guild come together, he explains, to “figure out how best to run their trades,” to hone their operations in ways they couldn’t hone them on their own.

It’s no secret that an opposition to sustainable living exists. Earlier this year, Texas state brought several SWAT teams to a sustainable community and threatened to shut it down. Each one of the community members were initially handcuffed at gunpoint. It was called “The Garden of Eden Community,” and was totally self sustainable. You can read more about that here.

Silicon Valley’s Contract-Worker Problem

Silicon Valley’s Contract-Worker Problem | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Earlier this year, I hired a house cleaner. I wouldn't have done so normally, but my place was a mess, I was busy at work, and I saw an offer on Facebook that looked too good to be true — a San Francisco start-up called Homejoy was offering home cleanings in the Bay Area for $19. (Not $19 per room or $19 per hour. Just $19.) So I booked an appointment through Homejoy's website, and a day later, a young man showed up at my door.

Geek Culture is Smart and Creative - NYTimes.com

Geek Culture is Smart and Creative - NYTimes.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Geek culture’s growing mainstream impact is often attributed to the rise of wealth in the information technology sector. That may be partially true, but misses what’s attractive in the first place about this culture for young geeks, who are often maligned as socially inept misfits clinging to each other in low-status huddles. However, rather than desperation, many young people are positively drawn to geek culture for something that is harder and harder to find in mainstream culture: the joy of making things.

“The first issue of the “P2P and Innovation” (“Revista P2P & INOVAÇÃO”) magazine in Brazil has just been launched. The magazine brings together eight articles, which are the result of the course Michel Bauwens, founder of the P2P Foundation, ministered in Brazil in November 2012. During the course – made possible through a partnership between the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) – Bauwens discussed with the students the collaborative practices around the world based on open knowledge, peer production and the commons.

Need for an holistic and emancipatory scientific methodology | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Italian Operaismo and the Information Machine, is a must read by Matteo Pasquinelli. However the ‘accelerationism’ is the name of rapidly changing Zeitgeist(s) -the spirit of ‘space-time’, compressed increasingly into smaller units. The direction of meta-data and big-data research already moved further within the timespawn of Pasquinelli’s paper publication in early 2014. The theorization of the emerging ‘meta-data’ society, already has to make quantum leap further in order to make sense of the fundamentals of the ambiguous global (and absolute) control society/civilization vision set forth by the infamous, joke like Islamic State screenplay. For this one has to go further and simulataneoulsy problematize the most recent developments in quantum computing,quantum-like cognition and quantum-mind research, overlapping research and applications between genome, cybernetics, Internet of Everything, and [unifield fields] Theory of Everything in physics.

Commons are forms of governance and governance strategies for resources created and owned collectively. Knowledge commons governance is likely to be key to successfully addressing important social issues in medicine, environmental protection, education, science and beyond. It is critical for us to study knowledge commons and learn how variations and governance affect outcomes: what works, what doesn't. Recently a group of university researchers affiliated with IASC has founded a new internet based research network called Workshop on Governing Knowledge Commons - knowledge-commons.net

Center for a Stateless Society » Crowdsourcing a New Wall Street? | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
As many in the libertarian community already know, Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne recently unveiled a plan to build a revolutionary new model of finance on the back of the old financial system. Namely, by creating a Bitcoin equivalent of the New York Stock Exchange in hopes of eventually replacing Wall Street entirely with a crypto-security trading system that would liberate previously elite investment tools into “the hands of the general public.”
