Free markets killed capitalism: Ayn Rand, Ronald Reagan, Wal-Mart, Amazon and the 1 percent’s sick triumph over us all

Free markets killed capitalism: Ayn Rand, Ronald Reagan, Wal-Mart, Amazon and the 1 percent’s sick triumph over us all | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Barry C. Lynn is a senior fellow at the New America Foundation and the author of two important books, “End of the Line” and ”Cornered,” the latter of which describes the dramatic return of monopoly to the American landscape. Both books had a big effect on me when they appeared, as did Lynn’s periodic articles in Harper’s Magazine describing the concentration of economic power in all sorts of different industries. One of the reasons his books startled me is the weird silence of virtually all our other popular economic writers on the subject. Monopoly is back, in a massive way, and yet it seems as though even liberals often have trouble talking about it. If we’re really going to do something about inequality, however, it’s time we looked this thing in the face.

Bauwens: Use a Peer Production License to Foster “Open Cooperativism” | David Bollier | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Michel Bauwens of the P2P Foundation recently published a short essay noting that the economic fruits of peer production in today’s world tend to be captured by capitalists – whereas what we really need is a system to enable capital accumulation for and by commoners themselves.  To that end, Bauwens embraces the idea of a Peer Production License, as designed and proposed by Dmitri Kleiner.

Re-thinking the Definition of “Public Goods” | Real-World Economics ...

Central to the instrumental definition offered in this paper is that public goods are created through the democratic process. Fundamentally, public goods are created by citizens voting for representatives who, in turn, make decisions about how government monies, raised collectively through taxes, will be used. These “elected funders” make day-to-day decisions about what and whether to fund. But in the end, the citizenry has the power, through democratic processes, to appoint and dismiss those elected funders.

Amazon Launches File Sharing And Collaboration Tool - Forbes

Amazon Launches File Sharing And Collaboration Tool - Forbes | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Finally the news that most commentators were expecting withAmazon Web Services’ (AWS) announcement that they’re taking on the not insignificant task of carving out a point of difference in the ultra-busy file sharing space. First I’ll take a look at the product’s functionality and then give some broader thoughts.
