Sharing Economy Can Be An Opportunity, Too – Responsive.org

Sharing Economy Can Be An Opportunity, Too – Responsive.org | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

We know that young people are less interested in owning products, and are instead more interested in whatever services allow them to use the products when they need them. But why the freak out by retailers, when this could be viewed as a great opportunity? They should all be following the lead of companies like Warby Parker and Patagonia, who have each been able to offer great “sharing economy” options in addition to their normal line-up.

Get involved with the sharing economy!

Get involved with the sharing economy! | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Many of us acknowledge that something is deeply wrong with the economic model upon which we’ve built our society. This has been reflected by the widespread economic troubles of recent years, by the ever-widening income gap between the rich and the poor, and by the lack of opportunities available for youth. But there are some great things rising up out of the dust. One promising development is a shift toward a sharing economy, sometimes also called a peer-to-peer (P2P) economy. People are starting to trade their goods and services directly with each other, instead of accepting the terms of engagement of big business.

Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network

Peer-to-peer revolution — Challenging traditional capitalist business models | The Socialist Network | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

One could have long arguments over the exact definition of socialism if it’s posed as an abstract future-construction. However such a discussion will acquire different quality if we are to base it upon real processes which we can observe in the present reality which are already undermining and (or even outplacing in certain conditions) the established models.

jean lievens's insight:

Here's a short article I wrote back in february last year. forgot all about it + never scooped it. I also forgot to reply to the reply. But I take it back up soon…

The Future Of Work – Humans Need Not Apply - Social Europe Journal | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

I am currently reading a lot on the emergence of a digital society and what it means for the future of work, living and inequality. Especially Jeremy Rifkin’s Zero Marginal Cost Society and The Second Machine Age by Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee are worth reading. Mind Change by Susan Greenfield is also on my reading list.

Shirky: A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy

Good morning, everybody. I want to talk this morning about social software ...there's a surprise. I want to talk about a pattern I've seen over and over again in social software that supports large and long-lived groups. And that pattern is the pattern described in the title of this talk: "A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy."

Evgeny Morozov: How much for your data?

Oral-B, a Procter & Gamble company, this year launched its SmartSeries Bluetooth toothbrush — an essential appliance for what the firm calls “the well-connected bathroom”. It connects to your smartphone, where its app tracks brushing tasks (have you flossed? cleaned the tongue? rinsed?) and highlights areas of the mouth (visualised on the phone screen) that deserve more attention. More importantly, as the toothbrush’s website proudly announces, it also “records brushing activity as data that you can chart on your own and share with dental professionals.” What happens to that data — whether it goes to these dental professionals, or your insurance company, stays with you or is appended to your data already owned by Facebook and Google — is a controversial question.

How the web lost its way – and its founding principles - HITC | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

It showed which houses were connected to the town's water supply and which houses were occupied by black or white families. A mashup uses data from more than one source, usually publicly available information, and almost always presents it on a map. The results were extraordinary: the map showed that almost all the white households in Coal Run had water piped to their homes, while all but a few black households did not. Those without piped water had to carry water home from the water plant by whatever transport they could muster, pump it from wells contaminated with sulphur and oil from old mining operations or, in extremis, collect rainwater.

Poverty Is Not Inevitable: What We Can Do Now to Turn Things Around

Poverty Is Not Inevitable: What We Can Do Now to Turn Things Around | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Inequality and poverty are suddenly hot topics, not only in the United States but also across the globe. Since the early 1980s, there has been a growing underclass in America. At the same time a much smaller class, now called the superrich, built its wealth to levels of opulence not seen since France’s Louis XVI. Despite this, the resulting inequality went mostly unnoticed. When the Great Recession of 2008 hit, and the division between the very wealthy and the rest of us came starkly into focus, various people and groups, including the Occupy movement, began insisting more publicly that we tax wealth. But still, helping the poor has been mostly a discussion on the fringes. At last, the terms of public debate have changed, because inequality and poverty now are debated regularly in the mainstream media and across the political spectrum, not solely by labor, by the left, and by others imagining a new economy.

Uber and the sharing economy

Uber and the sharing economy | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

On Monday 20th August, popular taxi app Uber gained another victory in its fight to establish the power of sharing economy. The Berlin State Department of Civil and Regulatory Affairs upheld its previous decision to ban Uber operations in the city based on a belief that the service risked passenger safety through the use of “unverified drivers in unlicensed vehicles”. The upholding of the decision represented an important coup for Uber and pioneers and supporters of the sharing economy.
