Red Plenty Platforms - P2P Foundation

Red Plenty Platforms - P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

"This paper takes Spufford’s novel as a starting point from which to embark on an examination of the computing platforms that would be necessary for a contemporary ‘red plenty’. It is not a discussion of the merits and demerits of hacktivism, digital disobedience, electronic fabrics of struggle, tweets in the street and Facebook revolutions, but of digital communism. This is a topic that has already been touched on by the wave of rethinking life after capitalism triggered by the 1989 implosion of the USSR, in proposals for ‘participatory economics’ (Albert & Hahnel, 1991), a ‘new socialism’ (Cockshott & Cottrell, 1993), ‘twenty first century socialism’ (Dieterich, 2006), or forms of ‘commonwealth’(Hardt & Negri, 2009). Unlike some of these sources, however, this essay does not aim to provide detailed, often competitive, ‘blue-prints’ for a new society, but rather what Greig de Peuter, in a personal conversation, once called ‘red-prints’- approximating orientations to revolutionary possibilities.

Are there true sharing entreprises ? | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

When evaluating platforms claiming to be a part of the “sharing economy”, it is important to look at why they were set up, how they are organized, and who they are intended to benefit. Those that implement a logic of collaboration, sharing and distributed power at each of these levels, stand to offer a compelling vehicle for change and force us to take seriously the transformational power of the ‘true’ sharing economy.

The sharing economy will go medieval on you | FT Alphaville

In Paris this week, at the Ouishare Fest, the great and the good from Europe's sharing economy have been delving deep into what it means to be running a collaborative business model within a capitalist framework. Are the two even compatible? Or is there a fundamental conflict at the heart of an industry that preaches collaboration but, due to being radically commercialised by venture capital money from Silicon Valley, also needs to profiteer from the goodwill of others if it's to remain viable?

For the most part it's a hypocrisy the community is trying to address. The $1bn elephant in the room -- the fact some aspects of the sharing economy are becoming the very thing they set out not to be -- has basically become too enormous to ignore.

Collapse, conspiracies, and three ideas for environmentalists to genuinely save the planet | (We) can do better

Collapse, conspiracies, and three ideas for environmentalists to genuinely save the planet | (We) can do better | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The frustration that I have with environmentalists ignoring animal agriculture as the primary cause of climate change was shared a few days later when I attended ‘Cowspiracy’, in which this was the main premise. Despite the conspiracy theory nature of the title, the movie was much better thought out than that. The documentary referred to the fact that UN reports had been repeatedly reporting animal agriculture as the leading cause of Greenhoouse Gases (GHG), with the World Institute equating this proportion to 51% of GHGs, or 32 000 million tonnes [1] This takes into account Methane (with a global warming power at least 23 times that of Co2) and land clearance. The Standard American Diet is much less efficient in terms of land area use compared to entirely or mostly plant based diet, with many studies suggesting the difference is quite dramatic [2], [3]. livestock agriculture now covers 45% of the earth’s surface [4]. Consider that transportation, the next highest emitter of GHG emission, contributes a much lesser proportion at 13%.

Doing Development Differently | The Official Blog of Heather Menzies, author of Reclaiming the Commons | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Heather Menzies: "After consulting with key stakeholder groups, including citizens, community and environmental groups, unions, organizations like the Pembina Institute as well as those representing the oil and gas sector to create the commission of inquiry, Notley might then charge it with conducting public meetings across the province. Here, people can come together in small discussion groups followed by plenaries to talk about what development means to them. I envisage it being a bit like the open public meetings held across the country and across the North by the Berger Inquiry into the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline in the 1970s where Justice Thomas Berger broadened the discourse to allow other meanings of words like ‘economy,’ ‘development’ and ‘making a living’ to have weight. For some people who might turn out for this inquiry, ‘development’ might mean developing skills, or development more as a child grows into maturity, or a community develops as neighbours help and look out for one another. For others, it might mean developing right relations with habitats and within habitats."

The Joy of Slow Computing

The Joy of Slow Computing | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

ell-meaning people have, for a good many years now, been forming a “consciousness” about where their food comes from, who produces it, and how. This gets tedious. But it’s also sensible, given how important food is in our lives. Computers, it would seem, deserve similar attention. They are constant companions; they shape our experience. Many of us entrust to them not only the results of our life’s work, but the time we spend carrying it out. Perhaps they’re worthy of a similar tedium, too.
